Skin irritation around the stoma

Posted by pidge32 @pidge32, Jun 12 10:39am

Has/had anyone had severe skin irritation around the stoma that you just can’t get to heal? I’m using the powder as advised but it doesn’t seem to be helping all that much. It’s quite painful at times.
Any suggestions?

Thank you. We are changing every 3 days now to see if that helps. Isn’t the sticky part of the bag considered the barrier?

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I feel so dumb but this is so foreign to me.
I go back to WOCN next Wednesday for my follow up and my list of questions.
Susan,
I can’t thank you enough for all your help. You have been a life saver for me 💕

@pidge32 when I had my first ostomy back in 1987, there were so many people who helped. I can never repay them, but I can pass the help along. It makes me so happy the I've helped you. It means a lot.

@pidge32 To be sure the the details are clear:

The bag/wafer has a sticky part that constitutes a barrier. But many people also use a separate sticky barrier ring that goes between the bag and your skin.

I was originally taught to put the ring on the bag/wafer, and the put that on my skin. Since then I figured out it works better for me if I first put the barrier ring on my skin, and then put the bag/wafer over that.
