Skin irritation around the stoma
Has/had anyone had severe skin irritation around the stoma that you just can’t get to heal? I’m using the powder as advised but it doesn’t seem to be helping all that much. It’s quite painful at times.
Any suggestions?

Eakin cohesive barrier seals
@pidge32 I'm sorry to hear you still have this ongoing problem. I think it's worth a follow-up visit to your WOCN to evaluate your technique, perhaps try a different product, or check and see if your barrier is fitting correctly. It's possible that you have a fungal infection, it's not that common but it does happen. And if so there are some antifungal powder that will help.
I think I remember that you recently had some stoma revision? The stoma will continue to shrink for a while after surgery and if that's happening, you also need to decrease the size of the hole in your barrier.
Keep us updated!
@susanf8
Thank you Susan,
I did some reading up on the problem I’m having and they talked about anti-fungal powder.
Just picked some up at the drugstore a few minutes ago.
I do have an appointment with WOCN in about a week. If this doesn’t work I’m going to call them.
We have been pretty careful as far as watching the size and making the proper adjustments for the pouch, so I don’t think that’s the problem.
I’ll let you know how I make out.
Thank You!
@janetexmsrrose I have used those since the start. They were added to my appliance by a nurse to help with the leaking situation. I've been using the small and thicker ones (5 cm), cutting around the edges to reduce their size. Now I am planning to switch to the 'Slims' to see if that works better. I have tried various other similar products, but I like the Convatec brand best. They sure do cost a lot.
I am not familiar with this product. Can you please post a picture of it?
Thank you

Here is a link to an article on how to use the Eakins Cohesive Seal (made by Convatec). It is sold by medical supply companies and is also on Amazon, Walmart, etc.

@pidge32 sounds like a good idea. I normally use a antifungal powder from Coloplast, called Microguard.
Just remember to "crust" the powder with barrier wipe or spray, to seal it. I also do a layer of stomahesive powder on top. You may need to change a day earlier when you do this... My appliance doesn't seem to last as long when I use it.
@susanf8 Thank you so much for this information. It sounds like something I could use as I have a lot of problems with my skin. I will definitely try it . Once again thank you so much.
@mariar55 you are most welcome! I'm glad it is useful.
You mention that you have a lot of skin problems. How long have you had your ostomy, and what kind is it? Have you been evaluated by a WOCN lately?
@susanf8 I have a urostomy for about 4 yrs. My skin problems comes and and go but not around the stoma. I haven’t seen a nurse for a long time. I contacted the previous nurse but she left the company but referred me to two others who aren’t seeing new patients.
