prednisone and antibiotic use for copd, how often

Posted by lizjlb @lizjlb, Oct 7, 2025

Is it really necessary for both? I hate prednisone and the dosage is for a long time. Does anyone just take the antibiotic only? Prednisone keeps me from sleeping for one thing. Also, do you start them both or alone at first sign of a cold or wait till you get phylum and coughing. Seems like move start with sinus and then eventually turn into phylum.

@kndaustin71 confused. I understand that a 5 day 40 mg is as good as 7 or 14 days. But, with only 5 days on 40 mg, I have not been told to do a taper, assume it not necessary with only being on it 5 days, is this what you are saying?

@lizjlb you’re right. They had me in the hospital on 40 mg prednisone for 5 days. No taper!!

The Azithromycin is supposed to do same as prednisone without the side effects. I take it Monday Wednesday Friday. It supposed to stop exerbations is what my pulmonologist told me.

@tjphillipp maybe stop flareups but if having one, I’ve heard you then need the prednisone?

@lizjlb
Yes . I take 10mg of Prednisone a day. The doctors want me to switch off prednisone and go on hydrocortisone tablets. We’ll see how that goes.

What allergy do you get from it?

Since I started taking prednisone the other day I have only slept for 3 or 4 hours a night. Turns out that prednisone contributes to wakefulness and it is better to take it in the morning with food

@fredandel The morning is definitely a better time to take it.

@tjphillipp My respirologist just put me on that same dosage of azithromycin. Is it working for you?
