Is cystoscopy a standard procedure prior to TURP?
I was scheduled to have a cystoscopy but I showed the Dr a kidney stone I passed the day before and the Dr said I didn’t need cystoscopy because the stone was causing the flow restriction, and he scheduled TURP coming up in April. And based on my CTUrology imaging studies my prostate is not enlarged, so I am wondering if it’s really my prostate or is it scar tissue in my urethra from giving birth to a kidney stone 20 years ago, which is when my flow issues became obvious and more recently over the last 5 years I have dealt with prostititis which was finally resolved by taking a 20 day course of nitrofurinol.(sp) My question is:
Should the Dr have performed the cystoscopy before scheduling TURP? Is that standard operating procedure? Should I ask him to perform a cystoscopy to make sure it’s actually my prostate and how would I word it seeing as I’m not a medical professional and I don’t want to offend my Dr.

I am not a doctor, but asking for a cystoscopy seems like a good idea and is quick and easy. Anyway, I don't find them bad and seems like a good approach to see what is there before doing surgery.

2 ReactionsI do not know what TURP stands for?
I had my 4th cystoscopy a month ago and have had nothing but problems. They started in 2016. I left the procedure last month with a catheter and bag in place that hurt so bad I spent 27 hours in a chair not moving or blinking. The catheter was the size of a #2 pencil. The bleeding was so bad right after the procedure when I got home, a sheriff would have been positive a homicide had taken place, or a calf had been butchered. The first three times resulted in having a decent stream and no problems save the horrifying pain of peeing for the following two days. Now....it takes a full 10 minutes to pee starting with drip drip drip for the first three minutes then a 30 second stream then drip drip drip. That is far from the nightmare where I now have incontinence while sleeping from 2AM to 7AM having an average of 4-soaked underwear within those 5-hours. Those 5-hour drenching's occur because I, thankfully, am able to get back to sleep after each clean-up episode. I sincerely have a fear of what the remedy might be. If you do not think you need this procedure...DO NOT DO IT!!!! If you're peeing OK, then stay away from having this done as it'll never be the last time! I wish I would have gotten three opinions before getting this radiation done in 2008.

@arctic22
I think a lot might have to do with equipment being used, been told that some of the tubing is smaller and more flexible.
@johnfailla1018Had a cystoscopy in Feb, no issue watched it all on the monitor . It was done so that the urologist could determine the impact that the prostate had on my urethra BPH. The only irritation was when I had a pee after but it was mild. I’m no doctor but it appears that you are having issues with your plumbing, big time.
