What’s my chance of lung cancer?
Hello! I’m a 46F recently on 4/23/2026 I went to my regular dr. I’m losing weight pretty fast (about 65 pounds in like 4 months) and so I wanted to see about getting some ensure prescribed to me to help me gain weight. Well, I have been a smoker since I was 12 years old, so my doctor wanted me to start by doing a just normal regular x-ray of my lungs because they have never been checked well once they did the x-ray they found a nodule on my left upper lobe and I was then scheduled the very next day to get a CT scan. Well, it confirmed I guess the size of it. This demonstrated a 1.3 x 2 x 1.4 cm spiculated nodule in the left upper lobe. I then had to do a PET scan on the 20th of this month and that area lit up pretty bright so tomorrow morning well I guess today Tuesday, May 26. I have to have a biopsy done. My question is has anybody ever had this happen and how likely is it that it very well is cancer they said the area is not smooth. It is spiky but it is situated in one area. Ohh they also said I have SEVERE emphysema

Left upper lobe of lung, transbronchial biopsy:
Non-small cell carcinoma.
Comment: Immunohistochemistry is performed and the tumor is positive for TTF-, Napsin, CK7 and focal CD56 and negative for
CK5/6 p40 and CK20 the tumor cells have an oncocytic cytomorphology. An adenocarcinoma is favored. All matched controls
are appropriate.
For routine quality assurance, the case is reviewed as an intradepartmental consult with concurrence. I JUST COPIED THIS FROM MY FINAL REPORT
@windywinland79 glad you're feeling ok after the biopsy. sorry to hear you've joined our club, but it's great you have a good team and they have a treatment plan already. if you see any mutations listed on your test results you can share them - usually a combination of 5 letters and numbers like L858R. is your lung nodule the only place they found cancer?

2 Reactions@windywinland79 those tests are used to figure out which kind of cancer you have. it means they think it's most likely lung adenocarcinoma.
this page from the American Cancer Society has a good explainer of the pathology terms/tests:

1 Reaction@donnademps yes! I love it here I just joined yesterday! But I had my biopsy yesterday and I have the results back already! My Dr. even was impressed with how fast they finalized it! But I’m positive for non-small cell cancer 🥹☹️ but my team is on top of it and he said we need to do a few aggressive treatments and then he will go in and take the upper lobe of my left lung out. He is very positive that they can get it out of me!

2 Reactions@windywinland79 The oncologist should have a plan in place for this type of cancer and the the tumor types you have genes for. My oncologist gave me copies of a recommended treatment plan with my mutation, EGFR and the drugs used to treat that specifically. It was actually a scientific study, but not too hard to understand. I worked in the medical field and I never encountered reports like this.

1 ReactionHi @windywinland79, These pathology reports can be difficult to interpret, so that's best left to the doctors. I'm sorry to hear that the biopsy showed cancer. But now the doctors can move forward with treatment, and from what you've said, they are hopeful that the surgery will be successful. Try to focus on that piece of good news. I'm sure you'll find out more next week at the appointment. Please let us know how the appointment goes.
