Erosive Osteoarthritis

Posted by anniebrook @anniebrook, Feb 12, 2021

I have been trying to get answers for many years to find out why my OA in my hands is so painful and debilitating. It doesn't look as bad to the eye as many other people I have met that also have OA but have huge joint nodes but say it's not too painful. I had the traditional basal thumb surgery on left and right hands, left went well 10yrs ago but right which I had one yr later has never been pain free.. About 6 mths ago the pain in the back of my right wrist became so much worse at the same time a large lump appeared.I thought this was probably a Ganglion then a few weeks later a softer round lump appeared on the dip joint on the inside of my right little finger which as made the joint very swollen. Eventually got Xrays of both hands which have now been diagnosed as Erosive Osteoarthritis which I have never heard of. Prognosis doesn't look good with this type of OA. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this and do I ask to be referred to a Rheumatologist ? How do I deal with this ? Is there any meds I can take for pain and to slow down the progression ? Thank you

I’ve heard from friends that have this pain that trigger point injections can stop the pain for some time. The shots were very painful but helped immensely.
Good luck.

In this year of 2026, I am just joining the "Bones, Joints, Muscles" Support Group. I have Erosive Osteoarthritis in both hands, affecting my finger joints with pain and inability.
My Rheumatologist has prescribed low-dose radiation to my finger joints. I am mid-treatment and will not know how effective this treatment is until completion.
The expectation is that it will help with my pain and dysfunction.
This treatment was used several decades ago, with a decline in application for reasons that I have not discovered.
Osteo--radiotherapy has recently become an application to consider for erosive arthritis of the hand.
I will post my results and relate the level of success this treatment offers to me. camped

@char2015 Thank You for sharing. What you documented may help the next person or at least make other suffers aware that there may be an alternative treatment.

@save4forever, Thank you for commenting. I do hope this condition can be controlled, and even halted, with treatments that do not add harm to a difficult condition. We do not stop hoping! cmpd

Hello, all... Several years ago I went through steroid shots in my fingers and wrists. I also had some PT for my hands, withe wonderful hot wax applications that were very soothing, relaxing, reduced pain a lot. I bought a hot wax machine for home use, but never used it. I and so limited in my functioning, it seemed to be too much for me to do alone. But, I do recommend that as well and movement, Pt therapy.
The shots were painful, but they gave me good relief from pain and some movement. I stopped after a couple of years due to other illnesses needing attention. And, I wanted to give my body a break from even a tiny bit of steroids. I was on heavy dose Prednisone for autoimmune flares, so backed off on hands.
I now have better function of my fingers and hands, on the Prednisone and with regular massaging with CBD broad spectrum oil. It helps. It also helps my arm pain, the skin irritations and horrid bruising from Elliquis thinner. Pleased ... oh, used castor oil on my hands and arms. It is weird and a bit heavy, but fantastic! Surprised! Thought I'd try it since it is a great moisturizer and nurtures the hair and scalp. That's a new one for me, but it does work. Thickening my hair! And improving my hands and arms. They look a bunch better as well as a bonus!

Wish it would solve my hip and back pain! Becoming a serious debilitating issue.
Blessings, Elizabeth

I’ve had surgery for middle trigger finger release on both hands, 2 and 3 years ago. Great results for both hands. I did do all the follow up exercises suggested. Best of luck on your surgery.

Thanks Char. I have osteoarthritis in my hands and feet, and all of my joints, so I know what it feels like.

My hands aren't quite as bad as the rest of me (I've had both knees replaced, right hip and left shoulder…..). I never hear of osteo-radiotherapy and will check it out! Thank you!

Joe
