Statin recommendation for SCAD patient
Hi I am 13+ years out from my SCAD, with no known recurrance. (yay!) Within a couple months of my SCAD I had a full work up at the Mayo (AMAZING organization), and essentially I was told I did not need to be on the Beta Blockers, Statins, etc. the the ER doctors had put me on. Now that I am bit older, almost 60, I have had tests for my LPa which is genetic and it is high. Due to the inflamation, my GP suggested I look at taking Statins. An older Mayo study I had read indicated that Statins may be contraindicated for SCAD patients. What is the latest information on Statins and SCAD please? BTW, I was diagnosed with FMD when the Mayo looked at a vein in my angiogram, so not sure if FMD has a bearing on this. Many thanks!!

I’m thinking if you go to a cardiologist for risk assessment they will put you
on statins. Check your High Sensitivity CRP. You can ask about getting a calcium score with CT. The pathogenic theory on atherosclerosis has evolved
in the past 13 years to consider inflammation as a major contributor.
COQ10 and statins are also anti-inflammatory in addition to working on cholesterol metabolism. Of course Mediterranean diet and exercise still the most important for us lifelong.

1 Reactioni have been to many cardiologists over the years, and no they did not put me on statins as my HDL/LDL did not warrant. Inflammation is my issue, I am genetically high. I am particularly interested in the Mayo study that discussed Statins and SCAD, as previously it was said to avoid, so I'm looking for information on that.

1 Reaction@kaylw She is a GP and did not know for sure so suggested I get in touch with someone who specializes. What I really want to know if there has been further study from the Mayo to the initial one that said Statins may be contraindicated. thank you.
@avt Statins, in addition to calcifying and stabilizing the extant deposits, and reducing their likelihood of growing or of new deposits appearing, reduce inflammation. Few people realize this or are advised of this benefit.
