@butterfly99 diets for all these conditions can be conflicting…at some point, we will need doctor’s advice as to which condition can be treated with diet, which with meds..which one needs the most attention and how to achieve a balance so we’re best helping our body’s natural healing abilities.. hydrate and get moving are things that are a common denominator for most conditions. Avoiding highly processed foods, alcohol and smoking as well.

@nycmusic PS — beware of the many internet claims for supplement cures !!

That's good advice regarding internet claims for supplements. As for diets, while a kidney-friendly diet may not offer a "cure", a kidney-friendly diet along with a doctor's advice as to supplements may help you remain stable and not get any worse ...and that's a very good thing. Everyone's path through life is going to be different; at this point in my own life, I welcome stability.

I have high blood pressure, afib, hypothyroidism, Type 2 diabetes, bi-polar disorder and have had weight loss surgery. All of these require a special diet. Which plan is most important?

@butterfly99 I would suggest you talk with your doctors about which plan is most important. Even the term important can have multiple meanings in this context. Your health is important and you obviously care. Work with your doctors to get a three to five years goal, then build a short term, say 6 month plan that will help you make progress on your long term goal. Sorting out 'which is most important ' is more than I would take on, and asking a chat room is not the best use of this audience.

National Kidney Foundation website has information on diet, treatment, etc...

Hi again,
I do believe that the drop of my gfr from 61 to 49 was most likely due to medication. I had had a shoulder injury a few months prior to the 2 separate labs both showing the sudden drop. I took the prescription dose of Motrin during the acute pain phase (3 days).
The 3rd repeat lab last week was back to 61.
However, that being said…. if I had known, I was borderline stage 3 CKD I would not have taken the Motrin. I would’ve found alternative therapy.
Not only that, I would have definitely been more cautious of over-the-counter anti-reflux meds, supplements, etc., and of course, my protein intake as well as the rest of my diet that probably was not kidney friendly.
Interesting that 61 was not red flagged as being abnormal and/or borderline.
It was a wake up call for me!
We have to be our own advocate!

@jaki Recently diagnosed with Stage 3 and my gfr had not been flagged in ten years by my PCP. It has been so depressing because I would have taken measures to not get to 41. Since April I
Through diet changes and no more soda, my last gfr was 50. I’m frustrated and scared and grocery shopping always ends in tears. I was told no sodas, more water, limit your salt, no potatoes, no read meat and pretty much sent on my way.

@slhearn61 it is frustrating ! But—we can get creative with what foods are safest for kidneys, like veggies and fruit… protein is not necessarily forbidden, just consume less and lighter …it takes time to work out our own changes—but the good thing is your #s responded very well. That’s encouraging to anyone dealing with CKD..

Hi, I totally understand how you’re feeling! I was a complete basket case for several months. Just ask my family!!
So frustrating.
Thru my seemingly endless research, I did eventually find some useful info/guidelines.
Are your other kidney labs normal?
Mine were. So I have mainly focused on water intake, around 70 oz/day.
Decreased portion sizes of all protein. And practice meatless days several times per week. No NSAIDS except daily low dose aspirin.
I stopped obsessing over my diet. Which was very difficult for me because I’m very OCD.
I do still have the occasional soda, regular, not diet. And a glass of wine or cocktail a few times/week!
I wish you the very best of luck in this kidney journey. It’s definitely not easy and often times made more complicated due to confusing/conflicting info.

@jaki I totally understand being a basket case. I am too since April 9. Everything is good except my gfr and my creatine is elevated. I have been drinking 64 oz water, no more cokes. I have had a funerals and felt like I was killing myself. You know. I’ve been eating broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, salad, chicken, some salmon and tuna in can rinsed off twice! Fruits are strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, raspberries, apples and pineapple. I’m missing bananas for sure. Did you go to a speciality list or nutritionist? I’m wondering if I should. Thank you so much for responding! I feel like I’m totally alone here, but I know I’m not, I just have never known anyone with ckd. Thank you!

@nycmusic it’s frustrating, frightening and very scary. I’m trying to be creative. Grocery shopping is difficult I won’t lie. I’ve never read so many labels or walked off in tears. I really appreciate you responding. It’s a lonely place to be.
