A Moment of Peace

Posted by edsutton @edsutton, May 21 7:08am

Sitting at my little desk by the window.
I hear the cardinal singing, full, round notes...red notes!
In the window my grandmother's ivy plant is hanging,
repotted by my wife last week.
Today it has four new leaves, looking very happy.
We go back 70 years, this little plant and me,
my grandmother's voice nurturing us,
and glad for my wife's gentle pruning.

This is my moment.

Good morning, Ed (@edsutton)

What a wonderful invitation! Too often in our hurry-up lives, we overlook such moments. I'm reminded of poet Wendell Berry's "Peace of Wild Things," a portion of which reads:

"I come into the company of wild things
who do not fret their lives with forethought of grief,
and feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light.
For a time, I rest in the grace
of the world, and am free."

Thank you, Ed, for reminding us of the importance of pausing!

Cheers!

At the end of a workday in the garden,
I sit peacefully by my backyard pond and listen to the gentle splash of the fountain,
Notice graceful shape the big shade tree and the shadows it casts,
Admire the myriad colors of the plants, whether blooming or not,
Watch the birds and butterflies flit from place to place while my grandsons play below.
One tends a fairy garden in a little red wagon, the other builds in his miniature sandbox.
Momentary peace before the inevitable "I'm hungry" rings out.

This is my moment.

Every day, after the other squirrels have gone up for their morning siesta, our little wild visitor Lucky comes to the feeder. We named him Lucky because he is missing his right front foot and most of his tail. I hate thinking of how he must have suffered from those injuries. However he is a sublime reminder of the beauty of resilience. He climbs and jumps like a champ seemingly undeterred by his losses. I thank him everyday for his great teaching.

In San Gabriel park along the river, a small group of older folk meet up to do tai chi. We know not each other’s last name but gather to enjoy the slow movements like a flock of birds turning together with the wind.
A pair of geese stomp around honking to ward off intruders or perhaps for the sheer joy of the day.
The wind rustles through the leaves of nearby trees. And my favorite view, the dancing leaves at the tip top. With even the tiniest wind, they dance.
I find peace there.

@edsutton et al: To Y’all who have posted to “AMoment of Peace” I offer a heart-felt Thank You for the wonderful visualizations of your experiences. All were thoroughly enjoyed as much as a cool breeze on a warm day. It is so easy for us humans to fill our days with busy “to do’s”, and let the peaceful moments go by unappreciated. Thank you for slowing my mind down to awareness of what is truly important. Hugs…

Good Morning All:
My peaceful mornings are so important to my mental health. I say my morning prayers, read uplifting emails, watch my precious hummingbirds as I sit on my patio with a big cup of coffee. I cannot wait for steady warm weather to return! I live in Ohio and spring is struggling to get here this year!
Peace to All.

Love the wonderful posts here….as for moments of peace, it feels great to let go of so many things and just enjoy the simplest things like the birds in our nyc pocket park and moments in beautiful music that make me feel like I too am singing and flying, even for a short time…cherish those moments one and all !

Hi all. Thanks Ed for starting this post.
It is so exciting to me to know how many beautiful, and positive, people are “out there”!
It helps to read these posts in the middle of such sorrowful posts. Thank you ALL for opening my eyes and ears to the beauty in this life. 💕💕💕

My free fall of older age is pure bliss.
No more responsibilities to children or family.
No more "I must get this done or that done".
No more "I must make more money to pay for this or that.." child's this or that.

I am FREE to just be in the moment as each moment comes my way. I am FREE to do what I need and want to do - or not want or need to do. I come and go as I please.

I have reached an age where I feel as if I am a large brightly colored fall maple leaf very very slowly floating on air, like the feather in "Forrest Gump" knowing not which way the next breath will take me, enjoying the ride.

There are speed bumps but no speed bump is greater than those I have survived.

I am blessed by God, Heaven and Earth.

Things to be happy about:

-Music, it takes your sadness away.
-Floating in water, it takes your weight of the world away.
-Mountains, they take your breath away.
-Stars, they bring the future in.
-Creatures, they make us not alone.
