How to deal with aging anxiety?

Posted by grahmilou @grahmilou, Dec 30, 2025

The last few years have been hard with multiple surgeries, now recovered, but ongoing pain. The loss of friends recently as they passed and the worrying about how the road feels like it’s getting so much shorter. constantly worrying about the process of dying. trying to stay grateful for today but sometimes the anxiety feels overwhelming especially as I see our country chance for worse and worry about the world for my grandchildren.

I wear a neck chain with a dog tag medal that has my cardiology issues, medications and allergies and my wife's phone number. I need to order another because I've recently been diagnosed with PMR and SMM but I don't think an hour or so while they get hold of my wife in an emergency will matter with those two.

@kjoed53 In addition to the RoadID mentioned below, there is MyID and a few others that are easily recognized, don't require a paid subscription, and can be updated on-line without being replaced. These carry a code for looking up your information, accessible to ER's and EMS (Emergency Medical Services.) You can also include and update a list of all of your medications and allergies, as well as people to contact (can be more than one.)

Thanks for the info. If I do use one of those, I would probably include that info on a medal around my neck. Even though I'm very comfortable online, I'm still old school in many ways.

@kjoed53 Good idea in case of an emergency . Most of us don’t carry a wallet if we aren’t driving or shopping so a dog tag is perfect if you collapse on the street where people don’t know you.

I saw an ad for a medical bracelet that can be connected to a hospital computer so they can download your medical information.

@karinweiss Same here. Exactly. Life has different seasons, and this one, for me, is about introspection and taking care of myself and my surroundings. I’m dwell in nature. I’m fortunate to have a simpatico husband to interact with, but I don’t go out socially. I always thought I’d be more politically & environmentally active & going to demonstrations in my older age, or traveling more, but I realize now why you don’t see many older people doing these things. I’ve learned it’s time to pass the torch. (I admire those who are still doing it!)
For me, though, it’s not a sense of loss, but an acceptance of this season. I feel a sense of incredible loss for this country, but realize I can’t help change it, and I live with that knowledge with the help of antidepressants, and try to focus on the here and now.

@susanejw It's as if I am revisiting my youth, protesting the Vietnam War, watching the horror of Kent State right here in our own country, later the riots in Baltimore city and visiting the aftermath with my dad- protest songs, feeling my lack of power at such a young age. Anxiety now is 100 times greater. My kids are grown and struggling with their own everyday lives and my grandchildren have a very uncertain future. I feel that I am honestly and rightly terrified of where we're headed. Some of those folks I've met act like "this too shall pass" which I do not find helpful, so I am focusing my efforts on going to weekly protests, holding up a big sign while I sit in my chair with my cane beside me. I've got some real health issues, so it would be great if I could experience some positive change before I die, but at this point, it's hard to envision that happening.

@slarson14 Agreed, let's keep the pressure-raising topics off this forum and stick to health matters that we ALL share.

I think we need to try to listen to one another.
People often post thoughts that I don't agree with, that contradict some of my life choices and beliefs, but if honest mention of these things is stopped, then we are denying real feelings, real needs.
I feel it's important to hear what concerns people and causes difficulties in feeling at peace with life.
We are not required to have all the same health difficulties.

I will not post further. But the issues that some of us have raised have significant impact on our stress and Mental Health. Shortening our lives.

@slarson14 I will get off this form completely. And deal with my Mental Health elsewhere.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. There is so much strife in the world that I believe that we must acknowledge the impact that these stressors have on our physical and psychological health. If this particular thread is uncomfortable for some then this thread is easily avoided.

Grahmilou-
This discussion topic is very valuable, and you created it.
I am very grateful for it. If Mayo Clinic support groups are limited to opinions that are never disturbing to anyones religious or political beliefs, the claim to be open for people to share honestly will be false.
You did not attack anyone for their beliefs, you spoke about current social realities that cause you anxiety and how you try to respond.
The thought that you now fear posting on this forum causes me real concern. (Even though I may not always agree with everything you write!)
Please stay with us.
