Tymlos causing belly fat?

Posted by kaa1 @kaa1, Jun 3, 2024

I’m on Tymlos for about 2 1/2 months now. I’m not usually concerned about my weight. I stay pretty stable. I’ve noticed that my belly seems to be getting fatter. Has anyone experienced this belly fat situation from Tymlos? Is there anything I can do about it? Why is it happening? Thanks for any input.

Well, that is bad news. I would have never agreed to go on Forteo if I knew I would end up unhealthy with additional fat tissue. I have gained 8 lbs. and it will not budge despite eating, as always, healthy and exercising. My thyroid numbers are off and my cholesterol numbers have changed.

@ydnas21 I’m wondering if this resolves after we go off the meds? Have you read any data on it?

Hi @sls98

After about 9-1/2 months on Tymlos (2022-23) I had to discontinue it - too many severe adverse reactions.

That said, at this point, I can’t really say I still have the belly. At nearly 71, it could be just age 🤔 or the result of several vertebral frax which can shorten the spine, leaving nowhere for organs to rest except low. In some OP cases, the spine bends inward toward the belly which can make it appear to protrude.

When I stand up straight, my stomach and abdomen are relatively flat. I need to exercise, get my weight back down, and focus on strengthening my core which helps in so many ways.

Sorry for going around the world to answer your simple question. Wishing you the best in your fight.

Cheers! ♥️

Only for what it’s worth, I seem to have developed a pouchy “roll” around my midsection and I’m not really too happy about it; I always took pride in having a strong mid-section.

I don’t know if the cause is Tymlos, Evenity, not being able to move around and get exercise (from side effects of Tymlos), steroid injections, perhaps my loss of height has smushed it all together, or simply gravity ;). However, about a year post-Tymlos and it’s still there. I’ll finish Evenity at the end of June and hopefully things will improve.

Wishing you all warm breezes and sunny days! Cheers!

I finished Tymlos , after 2 years of injections and also developed belly fat and gained a couple pounds. My bone density did increase, but the belly fat DID NOT go away. I exercise daily.

I too developed belly fat, never seen before. I am off Tymlos after 2 years and my bone density increased, but the belly fat is still there. I am 72 years old and work out daily. I am happy with the increased bone density, but hate the blubber around the middle that does not go away.

First, thanks to all for helping me realize that I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!

I am 73f and grew this new layer of flab (actually, pretty firm fat) on my belly when I started Tymlos 4 months ago. Boobs also seem bigger/flabbier (not good news to me -- I liked my sleeker tiny-boobs better). I have not had a noticeable weight gain to go with the new flab. I've increased my activity level (more osteoporosis-focused weight training added to my previous routine per instructions of a PT trainer) and am including considerably more protein (esp. animal protein) in my diet nowadays, as well as 2 prunes with every meal.

Sure, it would be nice to have the belly fat disappear once I'm off the Tymlos, but having it fix my OP is far more important. I suspect the weight training has improved my posture sufficiently that the rounder belly's not all that noticeable anyway.

I am less than 30 days off of Tymlos and my belly fat has definitely diminished. I am very close to my pre-Tymlos belly. I was on Tymlos for 15 months, spine BMD improved from -3.5 to -1.9, so big success. I am now 67, no fractures, walk almost daily and lift light weights twice weekly.

I have definitely noticed an increase in belly fat, particularly in my lower belly. This is totally new after I started the Tymlos injections two months ago. Very quick production of fat without an increase in caloric intake. So, I can assume it is from this medication. I hope the med works and makes it worth it.

@happiness5 The pouch can be formed if you have had lordosis also from back fracture of the thoracid or lumbar area. This pushes the pelvis into an anterior pelvic tilt, contributing to the pouch.

I experienced this. It is a fact. The doctors do not say anything about, neither Tymlos papers.

I have noticed this as well. Both belly fat and a little weight gain. I too have not changed my diet or amount of exercise I get each day. I originally was on Teriparatide, and did not have this issue. (My insurance would only cover Tymlos post surgery so I transitioned to it) I will be done with my two years at the end of this month and then will get the annual reclast infusions. I am hopeful the belly fat will go away.
