Only been sleeping 3 hours a day and regular melatonins aren’t working

I’m currently writing this at 6 in morning I’m genuinely am tired and can’t sleep at all, I need to want what is wrong with me and what can help or if I’m making a big deal out of nothing.

So my sleep schedule has always been random for years now. like I would get little to no sleep or I will sleep for 20 hours at a time due to stress and depression but I would manage with melatonins Which I would take more then the recommended amount which usually is 1-2 and I would take 3-5. But lately for all most a month I’ve only been getting 3-4 hours of sleep and that’s usually in morning or in the day right after I get home at 4 and I’ll try to sleep and wake up at 7-8 maybe even 6 at sometimes. then at 10 I will get really tired but my body won’t let me sleep and I’ll just sit in the dark for 30-60 minutes trying to sleep before just giving up, I think I might some have an one explanation, I’ve been using a different brand of melatonin then the one I normally use though I don’t think that’s is the issue because I used this brand before in the passed and it worked. But other than that I have no idea was happening, I’ll try using my usual brand to see if it helps, but does anyone have any idea what is wrong with me?

I take melatonin drops (365 brand) some nights. These seem to work better than the prior one I was taking (Natrol fast-dissolve 1mg). But in general, while melatonin can help lull one to sleep, it isn't a guaranteed knockout. Prescribed sleep meds work better.

I've been having an issue since a few months ago where teeth clicks during N1/N2 some nights disrupt my sleep (I think it might be SRFMM; trying to book a neurologist and am considering NeuroQuant to rule things out). A few nights of bad sleep due to noisy neighbors seemed to exacerbate it. Shortly following that, there were a few terrible nights over a month ago where I was eventually waking up at the N1/N2 stage for hours with no obvious cause, which someone suggested to me might be "conditioned arousal" due to consistent wakings from the other factors. The usual melatonin, white noise, etc weren't enough (btw, consider trying white noise if you haven't - it generally does a good job in masking a lot of environmental noise). So I looked to meds.

I tried my gf's Zolnox (aka Ambien), which knocked me out but I didn't continue taking it due to concerns with tolerance and long-term effects, and I also felt lethargic the next day.

In my research, I found that Dayvigo didn't have these issues, so after some doctor-hopping last month, I found one that prescribed me 5mg for a 30-day supply (but I only use it when I need to; expires in a year). I self-paid to circumvent the insurance hurdles ($135 with an easily-obtainable coupon). I've taken it several times now and it's worked really well for me. Using it I was even able to get hours of deep sleep in Economy on a flight, which is unusual (we'd all like a Business seat where we can lay down fully for every flight, but not always possible).

Last night, I went to bed midnight. Teeth clicks during N1 and N2 stages disrupted. Took melatonin drops 1mg at 2am, wasn't enough. Took Dayvigo 5mg at 4am, crashed soon, slept over 7 hours. Had pretty crazy dreams, which I didn't seem to the prior times I took it. Interesting though.

Another thing I can suggest trying, although it may not work for everyone, or every time for everyone (in my own experience it helped some if not most nights I used it, but not every time), is the Sleep With Me podcast. Free downloadable episodes are on their website and they also have an ad-free free trial. The host's monotone voice and random meandering tales are like audio melatonin in a way.
