Music is bringing out anxiety, emotion, past feelings

Posted by BoneHead @stsopoci, May 5 11:41am

I’m in choir this year for the first time in my 78 years. I’m singing a song “Sweet Hallelujah” written by Mark A. Miller. I’m practice it now with a recorded session on my lap top and I get to the last measures and I break out with tears and feelings so hard that I have to sit down and cry. I try it again and it got worse…

@stsopoci - a few members from support groups around Connect have talked about music stirring intense emotions for them. They may have some thoughts for you about your emotional reaction to the “Sweet Hallelujah” song with tears and strong feelings. Can you describe the scary feeling you feel like you can't control, stsopoci?

@lisalucier when I have this moment of terror I'm going into a different world. I have had these before hitting people that say something that I can’t even remember. I have meds to stop these moments so I don’t hit people anymore. I just lightly cry. It’s my father that I was scared of my whole young life hitting my mom. You can’t control or wipe out the memories but I wish I could. I’ve forgiven him for these moments and talk to my sister and brother every month about these memories when we were kids in the early 50’s. It helps….

When I listen to music from my youth and better days I get so depressed. I want to go back in time

Music brings out emotions, for sure! As a trained musician, I have discovered that so many beautiful choral music compositions, can be very moving! Over the years, I have sung in many choirs, and, mainly, it’s inspirational to perform and sing most compositions! However, occasionally, there will be a piece that brings out difficult emotions, bringing up, in my mind, the extremely rough childhood that I had to deal with! Having a parent who was a bona fide malignant narcissist was the worst experience of my life! So, some music pieces can, for me, trigger memories of bad scenarios! Expressing emotion is a big factor in choral singing, for singers.

I think music can bring out a lot of different emotions. There have been hymns that I've know since childhood that make me cry. Maybe it brings back long lost memories of family members who have passed. I know there are current songs that bring up feelings about my past that will make me cry. Often it depends on the state of mind I happen to be in when I hear them. I think this happens quite a bit. This song may be one you just cannot sing, or you may be able to learn to work through it over time.

@lylii sang in church this morning and got through ok with a little tears at the end. I’m experiencing a very sensitive time that I know will come and go.

Southern gospel music is religion for me. My funeral will have no talking, no tributes, just one song after another which has been meaningful to me and my family. As I am the only one left, I will make arrangements for this which cannot be changed. “Just as I am without one plea …”. Everyone from Tennessee Earnie Ford to Patsy Cline to Kris Kristofferson, with the Tennessee Waltz thrown in somewhere.
