Spasms after Whipple
I had my Whipple in June of 2024 (about seven months ago).
Two months ago, I had what felt like an internal organ spasm which lasted about a minute. Since then, I have had these spasms once or twice a week. Some are light in intensity and others I need to breath through them. They all last about a minute or less.
Have any of you that have had the Whipple experienced these spasms? Is it a stomach spasm? Any idea what causes them?

Did these resolve for you? I just had Whipple 2 months ago and have also started getting these painful contractions, they last about a minute, followed by a LOT of burping.
@ballakoala - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
How did your Whipple procedure go? Other than the spasms/contractions with the burping, how have you felt? Has your surgeon had any insights for you about these symptoms?

Hello,
I have just seen this thread and so glad about that. I have spasms, too, and glad I’m not the only one. I thought I was having a heart attack the first time it happened. My cardiologist said no.
I had a Whipple surgery 1 and 1/2 years ago. ( I still have my pylorus.) My spasms occur across my midsection and often up into my shoulders and chest. They last about a minute. I usually stand up and walk through them. I can’t see any pattern to when they occur, but they sure do hurt. My doctors don’t know the cause either.

1 Reaction@sara53 My husband had a Distal Pancreatectomy in July of 2024 , He also had the Spasms
and the Oncologist had no idea why. I have read responses on this site from so many people
about these Spasms. My husband also said he felt he was having a Heart Attack at first. They would last about a minute but they took his breath away when they were bad. They lasted a good 6 months and then went away.

2 Reactions@sara53 Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. I am sorry to hear about the spasms, but it seems that you are not alone in having them. I am glad that standing and walking seem to help. Are they getting more or less frequent over time? Other than the spasms, how are you feeling?

1 ReactionThree months ago, I had to undergo another surgery for an abdominal obstruction due to scar tissue from my Whipple back in 2024. What I have noticed is that since my last surgery in which the surgeon "cleaned out" all the scar tissue, I have not had any more abdominal spasms. I am wondering if this could be the "root cause" of the spasms that I had experience post Whipple and prior to my second surgery? Time will tell.

I’m glad your husband’s spasms went away. I hope mine do, too,
@carfbuch
That is very interesting, that the spasms may be related to scar tissue. I’m eager to hear how you’re doing a few months from now. Best of luck!

1 Reaction@nortonrene @carfbuch could it be gastro esophageal reflux (GERD) as a result of the Whipple …?
I have GERD, but mine is due to a small hiatal hernia and I have experienced pain exactly as described by @nortonrene. I take Lansoprazole at bedtime and sleep with the head of my bed raised. Not eating at least three hours before going to bed also helps. When I do get those spasms, I find a few sips of water relieves them. I always have my water bottle near me.

Thank you for the welcome. I am feeling well and my spasms are infrequent. My oncologist checks on me every 3 months so far with blood work and a CT scan with contrast. Get anxious when I have the scan and blood work until I get the results. Now that the weather is warmer, I have started walking again.
