C Diff issues after completing antibioitcs

Posted by vdyjor @vdyjor, Sep 1, 2025

I was diagnosed with c diff 9 weeks ago. I went through 2 different antibioitics. It seemed better but now almost 4 weeks later I am still having bowel movements 8 t0 15 times a day. Nothing seems to help slow or stop it. The only time I get a break is when I go to bed at night. I may get up once all night but then it starts up as soon as I get up in the morning. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what this maybe causing this? The infectious disease doctor gave me Cholestyramine to take once a day but it has not helped.

I hope you get some relief soon. I know it is a tough road to walk. I have read so many articles and watched many panel discussions about C Diff, it is different for everyone that's what makes it so difficult to control and to find something that works. That's why I stopped taking probiotics some can make it worse. Florastor is one of the good probiotics for C Diff. I have spent so much money on different ones that really don't do anything. Yogurt can help in some instances but it needs to make it into the GI tract. Most don't, that's another misconception.
Ask your doc about the fecal transplant. It is the only thing that did work for me. That's not to say, it can raise its ugly head at anytime. In fact, we were taking our grandchildren away for a week and my doc did give me a 10 day supply of Vanco, just in case. Prayers for you. 🙂

Thank you for the information. The more I read the better decisions I can make. I have also spent a lot on probiotics that actually make my symptoms worse. Thank you fit letting me know you have had issues with this too. I will ask about the fecal transplant. ❤️

I have unfortunately been initiated into this club, either as a result of immunotherapy or more likely a 4 day hospitalization for a diagnosis of Fever of Unknown Origin, although I suspect it was a heightened reaction to a flu vaccine I’d gotten earlier that day (possibly aggravated by immunotherapy) in preparation for a trip that has now obviously been cancelled. At the time of my discharge, I saw in my portal my lab values were consistent with anemia so I was started on iron infusions - however, no root cause had been clearly determined. I’m unsure if that was the start of this C diff, or if I’ll ever know.
About ten days after discharge is when I became aware my symptoms were probably due to something like C diff. Unfortunately, my specimen proved I was correct. I started on vanco Friday, have been feeling miserable- maybe slightly improved today but still not able to eat much as nothing is appealing. What dietary choices have helped others during this acute phase?

I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. The Vanco may destroy your microbiome. The combination of C Diff toxins, plus Vanco may cause temporary post infectious IBS due to damage to the lining of your gut, which makes it very difficult to eat/digest. That is what happened to me and as a consequence I lost almost 40 lbs and became malnourished. I was told to eat fermented foods but early on I could not tolerate them, or much of anything else. I would suggest that you search LOW FODMAP DIET to start with foods that will not cause temporary IBS symptoms to complicate your situation. One doctor recommended ProBioMed 250 (probiotic) and that made a big difference in digestion for me. Eventually I was able to see a gastro doc and he recommended Florastor and Visbiome (112.5 million) which has been great. Eventually you’ll be able to slowly reintroduce foods back into your diet. If you do take probiotics with an antibiotic I think you need to be careful of the timing because the antibiotic will kill the probiotic. Hopefully you can look back into this platform’s archives on this subject because there is a lot of good information out there. Check out CDiff.org - it’s a great resource.

@cas924 thank you so much for I love getting additional information to try to get rid of this. The doctor now has me in my 2nd dose of fidaxomid. I sure hope this helps. I am not sure now if my guy is still bad from the cdiff or all the antibiotics I have taken. I will check out CDiff.org. Thank you!!!!!

I picked up C.difficult infection from an inpatient stay in a well refuted hospital here in IL and was put on A course of Vancomycin for 14 days. If the diarrhea had not stopped by then, I would have to continue anther course of Vancouver all over again.

Luckily, I was isolated and my stools were well formed to declare that I am infection free!!:-)

Thank God for it.
Hope this info helps you.

@vijay26: I'm glad to hear you're doing well! I can understand your concerns about picking up C Diff but it's a very virulent bacteria. It's extremely difficult to eradicate because its spores are resistant to common alcohol-based hand sanitizers and many cleaning agents.

I had been less fortunate as I did not respond to either Vanco nor fidaxomicin. I was ultimately hospitalized where it was determined I had CMV colitis requiring a lengthy course of antifungals via PICC line and subsequently determined I also had ICI (Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Colitis) as a result of the immunotherapy I'd been on for my metastatic melanoma. It was a LONG fall and winter but I'm thankfully emerging into spring feeling stronger and better with the help of Entyvio infusions getting my gut back into the healthy state it had been!

I have to tell you this info.
If you are familiar w female private parts of reproduction (Va gina) being located right below the urethral pe hole, then a new CNA can spread infection from one patient to another patient, because
she may not know how to wipe down (not upwards) to prevent cross infections in a hospital setting. My roommate was a loud mouth old lady, who was telling her nurse about how many. "Runs" she had to the. Bathroom, because of diarrjea! Even then that Dr didn't isolate her at all. But they isolated me, because I WAnted to get away from her right away.

I had an Indian dr. Santa Kumar who runs the dept of Infectious disrases. He told me not to have any relatives, spouse visiting me as a first thing to prevent spread of my infection to my 81 yr old husband. He did not listen to any drs. He wore their hospital gowns, mass and gloves to get in my private suit to visit w me. He brought me a big piece of Pizza that I love to eat anyway.

Grammato3: how old are your grand kids? Keep them away.from you for a while, till you are 100% infection free. They tested my poops again and again to make sure there are no gets in it.

Diarrhea-cpnstipatipn-diarrhea"-constipation..normal w Vancomycin medicine.

Is the poop well formed or not?
Check it out daily.
Good luck.
