Oral Lichen Planus
Hello
I have had OLP for many years. It always presented on the side of my tongue or inside my cheeks. In 2016 I got Clear Choice dental implants. I still get it on in my cheeks sometimes but now I get flare ups around my implants. Has anyone else had this and, if so, do you know if it is due to the material of the implant?

@lkirnbauer I feel like my taste is not the same as it was before OLP, because of the meds. Especially when actively using them there is no taste. Your taste and smell never came back. Wow. The swish spit is dexamethasone intensol. 2mg/5ml . When I have the ulcers I use the triamcinolone, but after they have healed, I use it for like 3 days on and off for a week. I avoid using both long term. Its expensive.
I also just started Oil Pulling, Honestly I think this has calmed down the day to day sore gums. Currently using a sesame oil ,but will do the coconut after. After brushing I swish with saltwater /xylitol. Best of luck!
@kmm29 I’m not on any medication for OLP. I haven’t been told by any doctor, ENT or otherwise that I have OLP. I noticed the bumps on the way back of my tongue myself and diagnosed it. I think this is what OLP is anyway. Is the Triamcinolone a prescription? I don’t usually do well with steroids, but if it’s not swallowed maybe I could. I don’t know what oil pulling is. My gums are not sore, so I don’t know if this is something I would need, but I don’t know. Can you please explain to me how this oil pulling is done? Thank you!
@lkirnbauer Hey, They say Coconut oil helps in soothing the affected areas, reducing the size of the lesions and the burning sensation. It also helps remove bacteria since brushing can be painful I can't always do the best job. Because my issues include sore inflamed gums it seems to help sooth them. I have only been doing it about 2 wks and have been happy with it. Better to use unrefined oil, the hard stuff. It melts pretty quickly, swish it around as long as you can... 5 min or more they say. I make it maybe 3 min so far. Spit it out in the garbage and then brush your teeth. I also use sesame oil which is a liquid oil but they say the coconut is better.
I went to my doctor who referred me to an ENT. All she did was a buccal swab which showed some stuff related to OLP, I have not had a biopsy. She prescribed the Triamcinilone paste and Dexamethasone after I asked for it, she and my doctor thought it was OLP when seeing the white lacy patterns. The Paste is messy but it really does help clear up the big sores or bumps I may get much quicker.
I have not had any stomach issues with it which I have heard can be an issue. But I only use it when I have to. I have not used either med in a few weeks after I got it under control after having Covid. You should see your doctor, they don't do much, as it seems they don't have much to say or answers for us sufferers, but at least you can get a medicine to reduce the sores when you do get them. I suffered all last year with the worst sores and pain... I was so stressed out about it which didn't help. Now I feel like I have some control and knowledge with all the research I have done. If you do go... be precise in your description, armed with what you've learned here and with research. Good Luck!

1 Reaction@lkirnbauerbonjour,

@diana55 Thanks for your response. I don’t seem to have dry mouth or eyes, which I guess is a good thing! I will ask my doctor the next time I see her, about a mouthwash for this OLP. I have noticed since I have started using Biotene toothpaste, the bumps on my tongue are getting smaller. I don’t eat any cheese unfortunately, due to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Wishing you all the best in healing.

1 Reaction@kmm29 Thank you so much for your great explanation of what you’ve been through and what you’ve done to help it. I had these “bumps” on the back of my tongue for probably as long as I have lost my taste and smell due to Covid, which will be 4 years in December of 2026. I don’t taste or smell anything, but I can detect when I’m eating something sweet, salty or bitter. No flavors of any kind and I can catch 1 quick whiff of something sometimes, but not every day and not all the time. I know, it’s confusing! I will look into the oral rinse from my doctor and see if that will help me. I’m currently using Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash and that seems to help. When I use regular Colgate, my tongue will burn for a while, but using this Biotene, it doesn’t. Thanks for your help and I wish you all the best on your health journey!

1 Reaction@kjoeme1978 These medications are prescription drugs correct? Thank you for your response.

Merci
