Connection between surgery, hormones and hives while on Xolair?

Posted by cholash @cholash, Apr 12 8:58am

I have been on Xolair for approx 2 yrs. Since the first injection , I’ve had zero hives. 3 weeks ago I had shoulder surgery . Amongst other things , the surgeon advised to stop HRT, and continue it 2 weeks post op .
2 weeks post op I resumed my estrogen patch and progesterone ( I’ve been on these for over 10yrs. ) The very next day the hives returned, and I’ve had them for 5 days now.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar ?
Is there a connection to surgery , hormones , and hives while on Xolair ?

Sorry you are having hives and hope that they are improving by the time you read this post.
Surgery/anesthesia in the body takes quite a while to get out of the system. It is possible that you are having a reaction with the type of anesthesia and resuming your medications. I was on Xolair about 15 years - it was one of the first biologics used for Asthma and helped me tremendously. However, after such a long time, it stopped working and a new biologic was needed. For me - both Tespire and Dupixent had come out. I tried the Tespire - and it worked 6 weeks, then progressively made me sicker (hospitalized for asthma from it) Stopped this medication and was changed eventually to Dupixent, which thankfully, continues to help. As a steroid dependent asthmatic, I am very aware of how I feel and when I need assistance.
Xolair is now being recommended and used specifically for food allergies. It is not the primary asthmatic biologic anymore. Singular - a table medication used to be used for asthma - it is now used for allergies.
Look for interactions with the type of anesthesia and the medications you are currently taking. Hopefully, you will shortly get rid of the hives. Please remember - if you take Benadryl more than 5 days, for hives or anything else, you can develop severe nightmares and it will stop working on hives, also causing severe dry mouth, due to the antihistamine effect.
Good luck and feel better.

Hi @cholash - this sure sounds like a puzzle with the hives post surgery and restarting HRT, plus being on omalizumab (Xolair).

Tagging a few members familiar with omalizumab (Xolair) to see if they have any thoughts on whether there might be any connection. Please meet, if you've not already, @lenchiksf @ssnyder01 @pacathy @arthur2677 @covidstinks2023 @jenniferhunter.
