Volara nebulizer

Posted by davis5663 @davis5663, Dec 8, 2025

For anyone using the Volara for nebulizing: The new nebulizer cups they have started using do not work after sterilizing with a baby bottle sterilizer. The parts don't fit together correctly. Have you had this problem? I'm thinking I'm going to have to send it back. The company only recommends cleaning with soap and water which doesn't kill the NTM.

@dorothyjeansimpson Hasmyour doctor ordered sensitivity testing to make sure you are on the right antibiotic for the strain of MAC you have? Sometimes, new and different strains show up that don't respond to the same meds, and the docs need to find a different one.

@lilianna I emailed Dr Joe Falkinham yesterday. I trust his research. He said any chemical disinfects such as alcohol won't kill the NTM. He said any thing strong enough would hurt the equipment.

@davis5663 thank you so much for sharing this information. I have only just joined this support group and am sifting through all the posts. Sterilization of medical equipment has been a great concern to me since I was diagnosed with BE and MAC about 2 years ago. I was then living in Switzerland and my pneumologist there recommended saline nebulizers with the PARI BOY together with ACBT/physio. The PB cup and mouthpiece can be sterilized with boiling water but the connection tube cannot. I have now moved to another country and my new pneumologist does not recommend nebulizing because of the risk of infection. She emphasizes ACBT, postural drainage, physio, hydration +++ and using mucolytics. Now I do not use the nebulizer.
Has anyone else received this advice (ie. no nebulizers)?
