Dry mouth: Any ideas on how to help?

Posted by rostrevor @rostrevor, Jul 29, 2018

I have had coated tongue and dry mouth for 3. 5 months. Now mainly dry mouth. Have ruled out gastro , ear nose and throat and blood work and urine samples pretty normal as was ultrasound. Trying dry mouth mouthwash tooth paste and lozenges. Very temporary relief. Never had this problem before. Had bypass 9 years ago and am on beta blocker and atacand and Crestor . Maybe drug related but same drugs for 9 years did not cause it. Anyone have any ideas.

Many oral supplements have Sodium Laurel Sulfite which is the foaming/sudsing ingredient. This causes excessive drying. I brush with baking soda and quit all floride due to my Hashimoto's and Sjogren's. A friend suggested marshamallow tea.

Biotene toothpaste is good for this,

This gum works but it is expensive. ACT Dry Mouth Moisturizing Gum at Walmart has the same ingredients at a fraction of the cost. Just a suggestion.

Biotene and similar mouthwashes help short term for me using just before bed. I use Orbit brand gum several times per day and sip water regularly. perhaps obvious but review your meds with doctor to see if any contribute to dry mouth. It is battle I know. Wish you well

I had dry mouth from oxybutynin for overactive bladder. It was only a couple weeks but I developed burning mouth and tongue from it. Quit it and took awhile to get over the burning although tip of tongue still burns a little.

I have Sjorgren's Disease but the prescription medications didn't help and my insurance didn't cover them. I find that gum works the best and Trident has Xylitol which stimulates saliva so I get the fruit flavored variety pack that they sell at BJ's and Costco. Yes like someone else advised stay away from toothpaste that has sodium lauryl sulfate. It's in most toothpastes but there are several without it. I use Sensodyne Fresh Mint or Biotene toothpaste and have found that Walmart has some of the best prices on over the counter products. They have an entire section for dry mouth. Biotene rinse is good but stay away from any rinse with alcohol. Okay good luck.!!!

Usually the mouth will dry when mouth stays open. The mouth will naturally open some
For air. Especially during sleep encouraging snoring. This was my case. Internal nasal dilators were an immediate remedy. I use em nightly and at stuffy times during day. Hardly noticeable. I also stay unstuffed with Azelastine and Flonase together.
