Has anyone been on FORTEO and had horrible pain and side effects?
I’m a 59-year-old female. I was diagnosed with five compression fractures is not knowing when they had osteoporosis. They put me on FORTEO. I was on it for about six weeks and couldn’t no longer take the pain. It was so severe. I have been off it now for three weeks and the pain has finally subsided. Now I just started TYMLOS. Only doing four clicks to start and I am petrified. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks in advance.

@phaddad1966 why the change up after only 6 weeks??
first injection of Teriparatide caused severe crazy bone pain in my back, off the charts pain but subsided after about 30 minutes. Left me with nausea and headache I managed that with meds felt fine next day. I wanted to know if the back pain diminishes over time. I'm willing to stick it out if so. The other 2 options of Reclast and Prolia are NOT an option due to femur breaks and jaw necrosis. I've alreayd broken my femur and cannot risk that again with the other leg.
Severe Osteoporosis since 2014. Alendronate from 2016 to 2019 until gut issues from taking it had to stop. Femure break in Jan 2026.
Took first Teriparatide injection and within 5 to 10 minutes had severe bone pain in pelvic region and lower lumbar region in my back. It subsided after 30 mintues, left with nausea and headache managed with meds.
Felt fine the next day.
My doctor wants me to stop the Teriparatide but the other options are NOT an option based on medical research of side effects from Reclast and Prolia. I wanted to know if anyone else experienced back pain with Teriparatide (FORTEO) in which that side effect got better over time during taking the injections.

Hi there. No I did not but I passed out from Forteo so could not continue. Sounds like your reaction was intense but then managed. Reclast and Prolia are not bone builders. Choose your poison, maybe another bone builder, which leaves you with Evenity. They ALL have terrible POSSIBLE side effects but they may not affect you at all. I took notes on positives and possible side effects, so I can continue to make choices as time goes on. I recommend doing this for yourself. I was on alendronate, then tried the Forteo once, have been on Prolia for 1.5 years but want to switch to a bone builder. I am now considering Evenity, but want to rule out concerns about cancer and heart disease and have some ideas on that for myself.
says there can be acute reaction to Reclast (reabsorptive not a bone builder) like what you described and you should be well hydrated before infusion.
I'm also going to talk to doctor about DHEA hormone. since there is clear evidence now that it is effective. I will post more on this but not allowed to cite the link here. I want to get a blood test to measure whether my DHEA is currently low so I know whether I need that. This is my first post on this site.
So sorry you had the femur break from Alendronate, which is listed as a possible side effect. Are you keeping up with Calcium and D? Had a blood test on those?
If I were in your shoes I'd consider staying on the Teraparatide since you were able to manage the side effects and some subsided. Might be worth it for the bone building. The other meds, other than Evenity, are not going to build bone. Improvement, if any, is slow because reabsorptive drugs just prevent bone loss they don't build bone. And less effective to go from a reabsorptive to a bone builder, better to go the other direction.
Depends on your age and what you want to be able to do, I think. And you can't just go off everything after Prolia or will have rapid bone loss, must continue with something. Let's stay in touch. I have appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks, now recovering from a stress fracture with no new activity so I am concerned to do something new. I'm happy to share my summaries and more specific article links if you can't find. I tried to post links in this message but the rules don't allow it. All the best to you.

2 Reactions@cphip Thank you! My husband and I on the same page about continuing with Teriparatide.
Yes, to VitD and calcium, magnesium, etc. The surgeon was surprised how well and quickly my femur healed. I've been doing DHEA for a few years now. I think the ONLY reason my femure broke was due to my gut issues (courtesy Uncle Sam ANd Alendronate), malabsorption. Yes, I have a cocktail of craziness!!
Now, I just have to convince my Dr. Now that I know what to exepct from the first 30 minutes I feel prepared to deal with it. I'm close to 70 but in 2014 my bones were that age, so 8 years ago.
Prolia and Reclast are OFF the table for me based on research and other patient experiences.
FWIW, the pain experienced was bone pain and was directly targeted to the places that showed up in DXA scan as being weak. I really think the medicine went straight to the places it needed to. Does that sound a little crazy??
@inlimbo i’m on Forteo haven’t been on it long. I’m gonna say about four or five months. The only problem I have with Forteo is I get leg cramps and sometimes I get like flu like symptoms but that’s about it. I did get told that to take vitamin D vitamin K with boron along with some magnesium, not too much magnesium, and it helps with the cramping in the legs and stuff, but the vitamin D, K help with the calcium that you have to take to go directly to the bonus out of your bloodstream. My doctor wanted me to go on rec class, but because I had problems with my kidneys in the past, I have to be careful. She said that was better than the Forteo on the kidneys, but I was told opposite I contacted Forteo itself and rec class and no kidneys is a bad thing on class so I cannot have that at all so I’m just doing this other stuff. I don’t know anything about DHEA could tell me what that is supposed to do. I don’t know anything about it
@inlimbo Wow if that’s why it hurt! All you’ve been getting is crazy so go with it!
@cphip so, UPDATE:
I restarted the Forteo protocol yesterday after getting green light from doctor. No adverse reaction this time at all!. I fully braced myself for it but it never came on. A mild after injection headache and some moderate lower back pain I felt when I got in bed as if I had overworked with yardwork or something. Resolved that with a hot water bottle. The headache was about a 2 pain score and went away by itself after a couple of hours. More data points needed to be sure and since this is a daily injection, I'm keeping an open mind to how each day will unfold, but mentally feel better that I'm doing something for my weak bones.

1 Reaction@vmcgrantham I've suffered with chronic dehydration for well over 30+ years (due to unknown toxin exposure while serving in the AF). Many other issues due to same exposure but recently I upped my potassium intake and my dehydration improved. I'm slowly increasing so not to shock my body but the improvment has been noticeable. My chronic dehydration has landed me in ER's so many times over the years, I've lost count.
So now, am hopeful. A certain DR Berg on YT has a lot to say about Potassium. Look him up. After reviewing his findings (2nd source verified), I saw a connection with Potassium deficiency and side effects of Forteo. Side effects of Potassium deficit include constipation.
I'm on another protocol for certain small bowel problems and that has caused constipation. Since adding more potassium that has improved for me and I don't seem to need the Miralax now. Again, this is my personal experience. Only time will tell if it helps with the Forteo therapy.
Apparently, potassium is also needed to help transport calcium to the bones from the blood. Could this help avoid hypercalcemia??

1 Reaction@vmcgrantham DHEA I began to help with fatigue. But since it is considered a precursor hormone, it can help your body make other hormones that we lose as we age. If I applied it before evening meals I could tell it helped me with blood sugar levels. I apply around 4pm to assist withe circadian rhythm since I seem to be okay the first half of a day then begin to slide into fatigue and joint pain around mid afternoon. Given how well my femur remodeld and healed that might have benefited me there too. I never told the surgeon because I only found out about the DHEA research after the fact. He was actually surpirsed it had healed up better than I think he expected.

1 Reaction@inlimbo i’m sorry to hear about all of the stuff you’re going through. It’s really sad. My daughter was in the Navy. She got cancer from the burn pits. She passed away back in 2024 this month actually April 22 and all the crap that I watched her go through is horrible. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. I hope you get better. I hope things get better for you. My prayers are with you.
