Tips on raising HDL?

Posted by writer413 @writer413, Mar 20, 2025

I’ve always had cholesterol issues. I had a clean nuke stress test and am on statins. Good calcium score of 7. However, my doctor wants to increase my statins from 40 to 60 to get them below 70 (they are 82). I am 61 and about ten pounds overweight, trying to lose it. My HDL is 53. I exercise 150 minutes a week or more. I keep my exertion (treadmill or elliptical) for a minimum of 117 and try to stay between 128-135 for four minute, then 120, etc. Interval training is my goal for at least 45 minutes to an hour. My doctor recommended that I aim for a higher heart rate longer to boost my HDL. I get a little anxious about feeling winded and as a worrier, wonder if a nuclear stress test is really accurate. She says I did well and things look normal. Any tips for boosting HDL? I’ve added more veggies, fruit, fiber to my diet. Thank you.

Try using ground chicken seeds and ground flax seed plus Tbs of avocado oil in a smoothie. I got mine up from 49 to 80. I use fruits in my smoothie also.

Sorry , there were auto corrections in that response. It should be: ground chi seeds , ground flax seeds. 1 Tbs each.
I drink a smoothies every morning for breakfast. The fiber in it really fills you up. I use frozen strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. You can use any fruit or fruit combination. Chocolate milk with banana and peanut butter is delicious also. Just add the seeds and oil and you’re good to go.

@brokenbones I have ground flax everyday and green bananas . I used to put blueberries in my smoothie but that caused my try glycerides to jump . I eat nothing but healthy food since 2018. Nothing proceced, no dairy , meat , white flour , sweets, and nothing changes . the only time my HDl gets to 49 is if my HDl goes up and I can't have that as I have familial hypercholesterolemia with elevated LP(@).I will try the avocado oil though..

@19281928 reread what you wrote it didn’t quite make sense about the HDL. If you have familial coronary artery disease it’s going to be hard to raise your HDL. My overall cholesterol is great and what I do is eat a lot of fish that change is a game changer.

Hello @19281928,

I combined your comment on raising your HDL into a discussion titled:

Here you can meet members who have similar HDL issues. @writer413 and @my44 in addition to @brokenbones who you have met have all shared things that worked for them in this discussion. @19281928, has your cardiologist or provider offered any suggestions on how to raise your HDL beyond what you have already tried?
