I've had non-alcoholic FL Disease for at least 8 hrs and I get checked (liver scan) every year. Up until this past year, all seemed well until summer after having severe anemia. Now doc tells me I have stage 3 liver disease....I'm getting a fiberscan in 2 weeks and hope to find out more. Am a 73 yo female and feel fine, just low energy.
I have fatty liver disease and now high blood pressure, pretty sure I am going to be paced on blood pressure medicine but so far they all say don't take with liver disease. Any suggestions?

@ladyesheryl - that sounds like a good question. What I did was to move your post with your query about taking blood pressure meds with fatty liver disease to this discussion where many members are talking generally about having NAFLD themselves or experiencing it with a loved one:

Our adult-child has had fatty-liver, found several months ago. Not at all overweight at the time, nor diabetic, an unhealthy diet and, would you believe, over-use of Tylenol earlier on (she is 34yo) cited as contributors to problem. Has at least 9 blood diagnoses but not many due to liver issues. Severely high cholesterol including much plaque buildup. Also A Fib. Frequent transfusions as cannot maintain potassium, magnesium, platelets, iron (others) at decent levels. Low platelets brought under control with a splenectomy. Of course most of this Not due to fatty-liver disease. Get better!

You mention finding out your blood pressure is high and probably needing medication to control it, but they all say don’t take. I am not sure if you are researching medications and have not found any that are safe to take because you also have fatty liver disease, or if your doctor(s) have told you not to take them. It will help if you could explain a bit more, maybe clarify your situation.

You are not alone, my dear. I also have Stage 3 (Bridging Fibrosis) diagnosed last October by Fiberscan. I am a 77 y/o female. I am an alcoholic. I had quit cold turkey for 30 years, but following a pedestrian/vehicle accident in which I was the pedestrian (life-flight to a Level 1 Trauma Center 90 miles from home; weeks there and in rehab; and after six months with my normal blood pressure zooming and feeling like "what's the use" I started drinking again.
That was 9 years ago. My AST and ALT have remained in low normal range, so I had no idea my liver was impaired until something showed up on an MRI and I was advised to have the scan.
This was quite a wake-up call. #1: My husband is an elderly disabled veteran who relies upon my caregiving, and #2: I still feel that I have some good years left to me.
So once again I gave up drinking, sugar, salt and all the other things I really craved - lost 20 # and holding.
Like you, I feel fine but I do get easily exhausted. When I hit that wall, I take a nap to refresh myself.
I hope this helps you.

@corinda - Good Morning and Welcome to Connect! Your comment is the first one that I saw this morning, and I must say that the positive message about your experience is a powerful one. While no one of us has the exact same experience, we each can experience unplanned struggles that require monumental strength and determination to pvercome. I commend you for what you have accomplished. Your self-determination and love for your dear husband is evident.
Corinda, Were you guided by your medical provider to give up some of the things that you craved like alcohol, sugar, salt, etc? What do you think was the most helpful tip/suggestion/plan that helped you reach your health/weight goal?
I had nafld doc says I dont anymore , I lost 30 kg , went on the fatty liver diet , cutting out all the crap, ate fresh, cut way down on carbs and sugar .

Hello, @ladyesheryl. Thanks for the tag, @lisalucier.

My understanding is decisions about which medication to take depends on the reason why your blood pressure is elevated. Also, your doctor will prefer prescribing only when lifestyle (diet and exercise) doesn’t do enough. You may want to review a couple resources, if you haven’t already that provide more information about treating blood pressure.
- Overview of Blood Pressure Medications: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-pressure/in-depth/high-blood-pressure-medication/art-20046280
- Fatty Liver Diease Self Care: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fatty-liver-disease-masld/in-depth/self-care-for-fatty-liver-disease-masld/art-20587289
How long have you known that you have fatty liver disease, and do you have symptoms?
