Pseudomonas infections
Hi,
I have pseudomonas. One is 2+ mucoid and the other is +smooth. The pulmonologist has prescribed Levaquin, and I’m afraid of it due to the potential tendon side effects. She says it’s the only drug that treats this stuff. She told me about this potential side effect, but said it was rare and she had never had a patient who had a rupture. I’m 65. Anyone who has used Levaquin, I’m interested in if it knocked the pseudo back, whether you had side effects, and whether you know of any other drugs that work on this without this risk. Thanks!

I was on Ciprofloxacin for many years as every other month 2 x a day for 10 days for Pseudomonas colonized in my sinuses & lungs. They finally took me off when I got a Mac infection thinking the antibiotic is no longer working. I do use Flunosolide Nasal Spray twice a day, it helps to keep things in check. I was recently put on Levofloxacin for 10 days. Never had ruptures of any sort with either one but plays a big part in sleep issues. best of luck to you.

1 ReactionCombine your albuterol with the saline. I feel it saves time. And yes, this is ok because I started having these treatments in believe it or not, 1972 and they were combined all the time back then.
@kaybast
Which IV antibiotic? What do you mean by IV bag change?
The antibiotic is Zosyn …the Infectious Disease Center managing my treatment has a set up with a “fanny pack” that holds the small IV bag, which is attached to a small “machine” that is programmed to dispense the med to me continuously for 24 hrs until I go back the next day and they change to a new IV bag and reprogram the machine for another 24 hrs. I had a PICC line in and that was flushed daily and bandage changed daily . They did a blood draw each week through the PICC line.
So I had to go daily for 3 weeks for the above procedure …the other choice was hospital and I did not want to go that route. Please give a shout with any questions ! Kay B.

Did you get insomnia from the Zosyn? Do you think the 24 hour drip would make that known side effect of Zosyn more likely??
DO NOT use levaquin if you can help it. It is NOT the only drug to use. Cipro is safer and in the same family but you need to be hospitalized for 14 days of IV antibiotic. Do not let them use tobramycin. I now have extreme tinnitus, deafness, and stage 3 kidney disease because of tobramycin. There are many antibiotics that can be effective. They need to do a susceptibility growth of your sputum to determine the best one. Good luck. We are both fighting the good fight!
@irenea8 I’ve been on sleep med for many years so there was no interference with the med and sleep for me !
Yes, the 24 hr drip no doubt caused the tummy issues . However it wasn’t a steady dose of it . First week, nothing, 2nd week 2/3 times and 3rd week 2 / 3 times….Pepto was my go to to settle it down.
@beejenigma I have a possible penetrating aortic ulcer in the ascending aorta ,,,the infection Disease center was reticent to use Cipro for possibly putting pressure on the arteries .,
.Echos are periodically taken and so far the message is “there is no communications” .
Also I had tinnitus long before this illness and I have noticed that it became noisier and louder being treated . I have microbleeds that come and go but with this IV treatment they were much more prominent …larger and redder .. the IV has been pulled for a few days now so they are settling down .
Yes, by all means we keep up the good fight . I so appreciate this kind of forum that we can learn from each other .thsnks for your comments ! Kay B.

1 ReactionUpdate: one week complete.
Coughing has decreased (other than during the nebbing when i start but quickly goes away and at night because I suck on a cough drop lozenge before going to bed). Living here in S AZ with high 90’s low 100’s has been worrisome because of dehydration so I drink a lot of fluid including Liquid IV because I do not want to mess up my electrolytes and hopefully I am protecting my kidneys. I must use oxygen at night so with dryness increasing I will be buying a moisturizer for my nose that apparently is safe to use with the oxygen. I am walking more on our treadmill to exercise my lungs so Miracle of miracles, too, my pulse-ox is now reading 95 during the day. I have always had trouble expelling mucous but I seem to be more successful at that, too. One day at a time.
