Thoughts on cervical and lumbar spine surgery with pulmonary disease?

Hello
I am 74 years old and have interstitial lung disease. I have both severe cervical and lumbar nerve compression. I would like to have any opinions on having surgery considering my age and lung disease

Hi, @woodmaw - it sounds like you have a lot going on with your health right now.

If you've not already seen this, you may be interested in reading Mayo Clinic's information on compression, or pinched nerve:

What are the main symptoms you experience from the interstitial lung disease? Are you having more pain or numbness from the cervical and lumbar nerve compression?

You’ll need to discuss with your pulmonologist what level of anesthesia you’ll be able to tolerate. I’m certain anesthetists will be able to help you. What have your radiology studies shown as the cause?

Hi - thanks for the input
Lung testing has revealed severely reduced lung volume, severely reduced diffusing capacity.
summary: Restrictive Lung Disease with Reduced Gas Exchange.
I am having a consultation with a neurosurgeon next month bur I think he will have reservations about surgery with my lung condition.

@woodmaw I agree with you, but spinal anesthesia would not require you to be “put out” if they perform minimally invasive surgery. Spinal nerve ablation is done as an outpatient too. I hope you get some hope and pain relief going forward. Good luck.
