Pain in leg muscles, tendons, and knees after Bilateral PE on Eliquis

Posted by smasneri @smasneri, Jul 6, 2023

One month after massive bilateral PE and taking 5 mg twice daily. Experiencing constant and continual pain in legs, mainly behind both knees, in tendons, and some muscle flare ups. Have had two ultrasounds and a CT scan on both legs since I was diagnosed June 6 and they are negative. My D Diemer is .43 and all vitals strong and regular. Echocardiogram shows no strain on heart. We have ruled most everything else out. No trauma to legs, no cuts, bruises or strains. Is this related to the Eliquis? My local hematologist wants me on it for another 5 months, I won’t be able to make that unless this subsides. Anyone else out there having this issue? Recommendations?

I experienced repeated nausea, fever, weight loss, shakes and hideous joint pain! I went to 2 Urgent cares & 2 ERs when I hardly could get out of bed. They would throw more pills at me. I finally took myself off of Eliquest after losing 13 lbs. in one month! I have returned to near normal except for swelling in my right knee that I didnt have previously! My CRP was at 85, while less than 5 is normal so I wonder if its done permanently damage to my knee! You know what you feel like, while doctors are trained to add more drugs rather than go after root causes!

So true when you said we know how our body feels yet when you try to tell the doctor that they always seem to have a generic answer.” it’s not the medication that’s causing that they don’t have side effects like that” yet you go on this site and you see so many people that have issues with legs, stiffness pain After being on Eliquis. I thought I was going to be able to get off it after a year of taking it, but now I was told to continue on it, which isn’t cheap.

@ruth36 At this point I am not on any blood thinner, as it was thought my clots were caused by something no longer present. However when I saw my doctor two weeks ago I listed the side effects which I had (some still have) and suggested he check out this site. Moreover I said that if I had to go on a blood thinner again I'd hope it would be one unrelated to Eliquis, even warfarin with all its required tests and avoidance would be better. All along this path of getting better, my mind kept going back to my last day in the hospital, and how wonderful I felt. The day after that I started taking Eliquis. My guess is its the best for removing clots, an it did for those that reminaded. The original massive clot was remove surgically. All. in all, he is an excellent physician and I am alive!

I started out with severe leg cramps about 6 months ago. Got a saunagram done and had a blood clot from my knee to my ankle. Wasn't explained very well to me. Was put on 5mg of Eliquis twice a day. Several months later my left jaw went numb. Went to Kansas Heart in Wichita. So many tests were done and found nothing. Went through a bag and a half of blood thinner. Take 2 Eliquis a day now. Doctor says he might take me off of it this May. Calling my Doctor to see what's going on. I drive about 350 miles a day for my job. I do get out and walk during that time. A little scary with the blood clot situation. Saw my heart doctor a couple months ago and he wasn't worried about it. I wear compression socks per his recommendation. I've had leg cramps before but not like this.

If I were you I would replace Eliquis with Garligin, a natural supplement made with garlic and ginger, both known blood thinners. I had problems w/ Eliquis too, replaced w/ Garligin years ago, 1/5 of the price too. No side effects. Garligin made by Natural Slim.

@timheart1 what about Beetroot?

@jeanine1855 I don't know, I use Garglin, I am very happy w/ it, no need to switch.

Beetroot and Garlin, very unconventional treatment for a deep vein thrombosis. Personally I don't have much faith in Eliquis either. If you begin to Google and research it, you will find case studies with serious side effects. Warfarin, an oldie but goodie would be my choice, however it does require monitoring with labs and dosage adjustment.

I was diagnosed with bilateral PE about a month ago. I have been taking Eloquis for the past month and have suffered the same pain conditions. I have pain behind both knees, Achilles and in my left hip. I was thinking it was Eloquis, but not sure. Hopefully the clots will go away and I can get back to normal. Fatigue and pain are preventing me from getting things done. Very frustrating indeed.

@dlhargr Yes, I've experienced the same thing and have also lost a lot of weight, mostly muscle mass. Be prepared for it to take several months for the pain and weakness to go away after stopping the eliquis.

Triathlete/marathon runner and agree elquis destroys muscles and causes a run down feeling. Never napped in my life now after long run or bike need a nap, other issue I have with it is feel cold and have chills. Looking at getting off of it and going to low dose aspirin. Many on it are having issues like what people on statins experience. Some on statins have a statin induce form a myositis wonder if elquis does the same thing.

@rattris I was on statins for a while and had pain so bad I thought I was going to become wheelchair bound. It was a different kind of pain than from the Eliquis and from Xarelto. The pain went away in just a few days after stopping statins. Not so with Eliquis. I’ve been off it for 5 weeks now and still having pain and swelling in muscles/joints, especially hands.

@rebeccadixon Don’t give up about your knee pain. I’ve been off Eliquis for 5 weeks now and still have muscle/joint pain. But I’m able to wake up in the morning now. Still have a hard time falling asleep. And I’ve been able to do more around the house in the last week. Read some where else that it can take 2 months or more for the pain issues to resolve.

Thank you all for your responses! I was getting pretty scared with all these side effects and new ones seeming to creep in every day. I see my Vascular surgeon today and will ask him to take me off Eliquis and give me another blood thinner, possibly Coumadin, an old school blood thinner, Warfarin. 🙂🙏

@michaelalexander Good luck with that! They would only switch me from Xarelto to Eliquis and I had to threaten to quit taking the Xarelto. They both caused pain in muscles and joints, just hit different body parts to differing degrees. 🙏
