Does anyone treat their neuropathy without pharmaceutical drugs?
I’ve recently been diagnosed with neuropathy and given gabapentin for pain. I am concerned about the many side effects of this drug. I don’t know why I have this condition as I am not diabetic and have no pinched nerves in my spine. I’m 78 and pretty healthy except for this. I exercise at the gym 4-4 times a week and walk several miles when I don’t go to the Y.
Anyone have suggestions for me?

I am totally afraid of taking prescription drugs for neuropathy or anything else for that matter. It seems these drugs might address one problem only to create another. And, I agree with you that working remedies are hard to identify in that we experience pain differently and there are so many other factors involved including diet, one's health, exercise and weather, to name a few. I had a shin shave biopsy 11 weeks ago and I still have pain there. I like to walk but I seem to pay a price for it--perhaps it is tissue inflammation. My neuropathy has also become more intense than it was before the shin surgery. I have a weak back due to degenerative disc disease and since I have been more focused on treating the shin, my back pain is returning. The most I will take is some tylenol. I wish the shin pain would resolve. I am going to see a physiatrist this week. Other doctors have not been so helpful thus far.

2 Reactions@dbeshears1 - Can you share what kind/brand/type of Magnesium you take? There are so many out there. I usually take Liposomal (liquid) Vitamin C and B12 through Manna. I've tried various pill types, but I don't notice anything improving, including my restless legs. I'm on 75mg of Lyrica 3x a day - it's becoming less effective. I also take 600mg R-ALA (Immunovites). I definitely notice a difference if I stop taking it. Thanks for sharing.
Hello Annashby,
I am in the same boat as you...but I am 64 years old. I am curious, did you recently get a Bunionectomy performed on your feet?
@brennankb55 I just buy the drug store specials for vitamins, usually CVS or Walgreens has Nature’s Best or another one on sale buy one get one free. I take 100 mg every other day, mostly because I take a low dose of iron (for other reasons) every other day and the Magnesium helps keep the GI system balanced as well as giving my legs strength and less restless. I accidentally bought 400 mg pills once, and found that it was too high (even cut in half); it made me weak and the GI overactive. So with trial & error have learned that 100 every other day is what my good spot is. A doctor recommended Lyrica once but he couldn’t explain how it would change anything (but possible weight gain) so we agreed to not change anything.

I find class IVlaser therapy has helped me tremendously. I had to receive treatment several times weekly for first month or so before it made major difference. I have to get the therapy at least 2 to 3 times month to maintain. Not a permanent cure for me but it has changed my life and eliminated the pain
@gmjs
I would like to know more about the laser therapy treatment. Where did you get it or who administered it to you? Getting out of pain would be welcomed at this point. Friday I am going to see a physiatrist and perhaps he can find out what is causing this pain. I know it is due to the shave biopsy but I am uncertain if I am dealing with irritated nerve(s), scar tissue pressing on nerve or nerve entrapment or maybe just a long healing or remodeling process that causes pain. I still exercise and cold weather is another challenge especially now with March winds--allergens are making life tougher. Wishing you well.
It is very likely, given your age that your not digesting iron and B12 sufficiently well and it is causing your nerve sheets to react with inflammation and pain. Besides increasing my exercise, I began having an egg every single day plus bisglycinate iron and B12. Supplement. It relieved about 90% of my neuropathy pain.
@cit10jetjockey , I’m so sorry to hear that. I’ve heard many stories about cholesterol meds, statins, etc., but not that one. Is it a known side effect of the particular medication?
@gypsyblue Most statins can cause Type 2 diabetes and that can cause the nerve damage and then here comes PN. There were some interesting articles about Lipitor and the problems it caused. PN was the main issue.
