Are you taking any drug for the GERD. ?
Hi @rice
I am not familiar with Cialis (Tadalafil) so I had to look it up. If you haven’t read more about the drug used for a variety of conditions including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), I am including a link:
- Mayo Clinic Tadalafil Overview
https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/tadalafil-oral-route/description/drg-20067204
I would like to introduce you to @spino who has mentioned GERD related to Tadalafil and may have more information to help you. You might want to visit with @jc76.
How long have you been taking Cialis?
I went to Rice (University) and I eat rice, but I also get GERD from both Tadalafil and Sildenafil (first marketed as Cialis and Viagra respectively.) I am a prostate cancer guy and these drugs are both used for us after surgery or radiation. They increase blood flow...but you can read all that online.
The acid reflux/Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may have been an underlying tendency for me, but it wasn't an acute problem until I started taking these. Either one would be accompanied by GERD, not just in the short term but ongoing. Not fun. I also got headaches.
I shifted away to alternative treatment strategies but my urologist encouraged me to keep trying the PDE5 inhibitors. The GERD is apparently caused by the same effect on the sphincter between the stomach and the esophagus, so it's the actual intended drug effect not an extraneous side effect.
Eventually I was able to live with it, treating it with calcium carbonate chewable tablets, which lower stomach acid levels. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Ultra-Strength-Antacid-Tablets-Tropical-Fruit-Twin-Pack-160-Count/837566287 I take them whenever the GERD bothers me, but especially before bed since GERD is more of a problem when prone.
BTW, if you are taking tadalafil daily, you might want to take it first thing in the morning so you are upright longer and possibly also before eating so it is less available at the sphincter (between the stomach and esophagus.) Food in the stomach can absorb stomach acid as well.
One of the reasons I've used sildenafil rather than tadalafil, though, is that tadalafil stays in the system more continuously, but either one gives me the GERD for days, not hours.
Anyway, I am tolerating it now, and for my application, dealing with GERD and headaches is worth it once I learned to tolerate it better. It doesn't seem to affect me as much now as it did at the beginning. The calcium carbonate side effects have so far not been onerous, but I don't take it continually, just as needed, less than daily.

I was not sure if you were asking me your question or @rice.
I have been taking Cialis (5mg) for about 1 year. I was told would help with calming down my bladder, prostate, and uretha. It did. I choose to take it in mornings as when I am awake most benefit. I noticed in evenings my urgency to go is much lower and plenty of time to reach toilet. I sometimes go to bathroom without an urgency just so I won't have one.
I was having some issues with incontinence but from urgency to void and not enough time. It was when I needed to go urinate but could not get there in time (like driving) or lots of clothes on. It really helped reduced the urgency. Then noticed I was not having a much need to go to the bathroom as much but seemed to have more of a longer urination.
It has been 3 years since my radiation ended. I think most of my present problems if quite frankly old age and should be doing my Kegel exercises more.freisians1st I have been taking Cialis for about 1 year. 1 ReactionTaking Tadalafil (Cialis) 5mg for BPH
And it works once I figured out when to take the medication.
My doctor prescribed Omeprazole 20mg Ec Cap. Take 30/60min before meals. It works great and it stopped my Heartburn’s.
@hanksgt I also had terrible GERD and was prescribed Omeprazole (Prilosec PPI). Yes it worked great but you need to do your due diligence. The list of prescription meds that it has reactions to is very long. More concerning to me is the strong but apparently unverifiable association with increased risk of Dementia if taken long term (>4yrs). I was alarmed by this so I stopped taking it -- I take Tums now when I need to and they work fine
@soor I have also read that Omerprazole may cause dementia so I only took it once when I lost my gut bacteria due to a course of antibiotics. My long term fix was to drink Kefir which is available in the yogurt section of most food stores. Did that for a month and the heartburn is GONE and that was 3 years ago!
I also have a warning for Tadalafil users. I have read it has a 17 hour half life in the body. If you take it every day you will have too much in you after a week or two. You should take it every other day and then skip a couple of days every 2 weeks to let it clear out.
More info:
Because of the long half-life of tadalafil compared to sildenafil, the proper dosing is more problematic.
Dose-Dependent Adverse Events of tadalafil:
Headache
Dyspepsia (indigestion)
Back pain
Myalgia (muscle pain)
These side effects tend to decrease in incidence with longer treatment duration
Excellent advice. I have had gerd for some time and have a modern-sized hiatal hernia which makes it worse. My doctor prescribed 40 milligrams of omniprazole, but I am reluctant to take it because of the side effects such as potential for dementia and blockage of some nutrients in food and vitamin supplements. Kefir is an excellent choice too help balance the gut. I currently take 5 mg daily tadafil but have never felt that it contributed to GERD. I may be wrong, however. I'll find that so long as I don't eat acidic Foods such as tomatoes and some Italian foods in particular I am okay. Also, eliminate or restrict alcohol consumption, particularly on the Rock drinks such as Scotch whiskey. I would also suggest that keep a daily log for a while to see what causes problems and then remove those foods and drinks that do so. Good luck.
