After Iridotomy - eye pain and headaches 2 months later
I had a YAG iridotomy done July 24th because my angles were closed. No pain, no nothing … no symptoms. My left eye was done first and yes it hurt but in 5 minutes, pain was gone. A whole different story with my right eye. The initial laser zap was an unbelievable pain that I have ever experienced (I have a very high tolerance for pain) and it never went away and I also had extreme headache on right side as well. I asked the opthamologist what happened because of the extreme pain and headaches. He said nothing. I asked if everything was ok, he said yes. I continue to have headaches and pain in my right eye 2 months later. Has anyone else experienced this?

@jgl I posted here back in the spring after seeing an optometrist who said I had narrow angles and had to get LPI or else and referred me to a laser surgeon who told me that, yes, I had narrow angles and should have it done ASAP or else. I had read a bit about narrow versus closed angles before seeing this laser surgeon , so when he said "narrow", I was relieved and told him I was glad they were narrow and not closed. Right then, he changed his answer to "No, they are closed" I was scared and ready to get the LPI done. When I got home, I went online and I came across this thread, and doubt kicked in. I wasn't having the symptoms I was supposed to be having due to narrow angles. I have since then, seen 3 additional eye doctors. All 3 have said my angles have some mild narrowing, but nothing to be concerned about. One of them described it as maybe 3 out of 10 narrowing.
I am just so disgusted with how the first eye doctor/laser surgeon tried to scare me into doing LPI by lying that my angles were closed. Just be careful to get confirmation when someone tells you something. Unfortunately, integrity is not a given just because someone has a medical license. Being at risk for an angle closure attack is very serious, and I was very concerned. I still am to some degree, being watchful in case. I am taking a supplement called "Eye Pressure Support" by Life Extensions. My pressure is staying around 16 to 17, down from 18 - 19, and I don't have the blurry vision anymore since I have been taking it. All the best.
Sorry you have this concern... long story short as I can ... diagnozed with Normal Tension Glaucoma...2018 new optometrist eventually sent me out of town for Iridotomies... 2020. I stood up she "zapped each eye" I left. RECENTLY I read that Iridotomty procedure is: they put in eye drops, put in lenses, do the procedure, remove lenses, give patient drops to use after and check eye pressure in the office in an hour. None of this happened, just the zapping. Now I wonder about the whole experience! I will bring this up next local Optom. appointment but only recently read about the "procedure" being quite different. I just trusted her. Pressures for past few years usually 18 and Latanoprost since 2018 .. thankfully still have my sight even with floaters and dry eyes etc. Wish I had checked it all out at least on Internet before I had the procedure...as a bit too late to question it now. Best of luck to you....

1 Reactiondebbie48 I am SO sorry I only saw your post today. It was DR.TROPE at Tornto Western. He has since retired. After I saw him 2018 I got C.Diff and meds for months and ended up having a breakdown mentally and physically.. so my world has not been the same since. Actdually I have so many other health issues I am all over the place here on mayo connect that I get mixed up. I just typed something on another chat thing on here ... thing is so many places to discuss I still find it confusing. I did not have iridotomy there but in Sudbury and it wa just a zap each eye... 2020... now am wondering if two types of Iridotomies as she did not put in drops, nor lenses, nor give me drops to use after... ??? Am going to ask relatively new optometrsit next week about it all.. how come differnt people desdcripbe different ways Iridotomies done, I am probably not understanding it all .. sorry about not seeing your question, J.

1 Reaction@lacy2 It may have been very necessary for you to have LPI. I hesitated because of other issues I have with my vision, where this procedure would affect me more than a person with otherwise healthy eyes. Because of my hesitation, I happened to learn that I was not given the truth initially. I had to see more than one doctor after the second one gave me a different story, in order to know who was telling me the truth......not to mention, that it was hard for me to believe that a doctor could be so blatantly untruthful about something like this.
If LPI has not caused you any visual disturbances or chronic pain, than you are one of the many that may benefit from the protection it is said to offer in lowering the chance of getting a closure attack. Your description of how the procedure is supposed to be done, is helpful in case I ever have to go through with it. Thank you. I hope you continue to enjoy good eyesight with no complications. Best to you.

1 Reaction...and I wish you the very best. Irritates me when family physician tell me its ok to take this drug or that... but Iridotomies CAN grow over, I was told by Opthalmologist.. and we have to make sure still "open" - lots of luck where I live .... if I took some meds taht cause increase in eye pressure and IF had issues, say through the night... there is NO qualified dr to help me at our Emerge. Next week I am showing my current Optom what I read on Internet as the Iridotomy procedure, which I did NOT have, just a zap from her machine... and see what he has to say. IF of interest will try and find this again and report back type thing... i did have a lot of double vision afterwards but came and went and no one said why. xx
