Distended lower abdomen following a colon resectioning surgery

Posted by hogwoody1 @hogwoody1, Mar 8 5:18pm

I had a colon resection for perforation resulting from diverticulitis. I had a reversal nine months later. I had a distended lower abdomen following the first surgery and it has gotten larger following the reversal surgery. The reversal surgery was 9 weeks ago and the distended abdomen has increased slightly and is palpable. Will this resolve itself eventually ?

I believe it can resolve at least partially on its own, may take time…ask your docs if it persists or creates problems.

My surgeon indicated the same thing with no time frame. Time at 79 is somewhat a limiting factor lol

Could you have a hernia? What has your doctor told you?

The surgeon indicated I had three hernias. She removed the largest which was adjacent to and caused the ostemy to appear raised. The other two smaller hernias were not surgically repaired. She indicated having something done with the two smaller hernias was not necessary to surgically reverse the original surgery.

@hogwoody1
Have all the hernias appeared after the first surgery?
It is 9 weeks now.Any surgical reaction should subside in 8 weeks.Ask them whether you can start abdominal exercises.They help a lot in toning the abdominal muscles which have lost their tone or muscle mass.Is it ok for you to tell your age,it matters too.

What kind of incision is it

@premi —79 —-reversal was done by scope (?) Exercise and lifting was to be avoided for 8-10 weeks. I have an appointment with my primary care physician on 3/23.

@hogwoody1
Thanks for the the details
If it was done by the scope then now the distension should have nothing to do with the recurrence of a hernia..If the distension is not having any pain on touching then resuming some abdominal exercise usually helps.As we grow older the muscle tone is lost and there is a distension due to lack of exercise.I really hope it is going to be as simple as this in your review.Best of recovery for you

@premi I think vertical incision for open surgery makes our bellies look different…not long after surgery I have the new normal, no problem as I’m not in any bikini competitions ! The swelling that comes from surgery generally goes away in a short time.
