Treatment & Travel: Please offer your opinion

Posted by service1010 @service1010, Mar 13 9:33am

I am struggling with the decision if should I cancel my 2 week hiking trip to Slovenia in early September.

I plan to start SBRT, with Lupron, in early June. I will probably get my 6 month Lupron shot then. One month later, in late June, the 5 radiation sessions. I am 74 yo in excellent health.

From those with experience, do you think I will be able to do the 10 day, 5 mile (slow) a day, hiking trip? The longest leg of the plane ride is 9 hours. I been planning for a year!

I guess my main concerns are fatigue, hot flashes and urgency in elimination.

I understand that everyone reacts differently, but I want to go on my trip but I also want to be able to enjoy it!

Thanks in advance

One month after SBRT and during my second of six months of Orgovyx I went on a 2 week SCUBA diving trip to Roatan Honduras. I was 68. I say go for it!

In March 2018 I was "nearing the home"stretch in my triplet therapy...

I had completed the chemotherapy in May 2017, the whole pelvic lymph nodes radiation in July 2017 and was 15 months into my 18 months on Lupron.

I flew to Dallas to link up with my sisterand from there we flew to El Paso and drove to White Sands, NM to do the Bataan Death March Memorial Hike.

Challenging under any circumstances but 5/6 of the way through your Lupron sentence...

I completed it.

So yes, take the damn trip!

@kujhawk1978 Yes Sir! Wow, completing the Bataan March when 100% well is a challenge. Great job

If you have a positive attitude and are willing to recognize that you may not feel 100%, then go for it.
I had a 10 - 20% "power diminition" from ADT Orgovyx (which you may want to consider vs Lupron).
Sounds as if you are someone who would push through any fatigue.
ADT impacts different men differently.
Best wishes.

You should have plenty of time to recover from SBRT. It usually causes some urinary issues, Taking Flomax can almost always resolve those problem in a short time

Are you having a barrier like SpaceOAR, Barrigel, or BioProtect put in so that it can protect your rectum.

My brother had almost identical procedure to yours at 77, After three months, he was doing just fine. He was getting some hot flashes, but it wasn’t debilitating.

Yes, it’s true that some people can have some pretty serious side effects but it is a very small percentage. If you’re in good enough shape that you can do that kind of hike now then doing it in September shouldn’t be a problem.

@jeffmarc Hoping it's not me! TY for sharing about your brother

You seem to have a good 8 weeks to gain back most of your strength; I would lobby for Orgovyx, if possible, since your recovery should be quicker than with Lupron.
No one can predict how anyone will react - if at all - to treatment, but your strong desire to travel will, in fact, energize you. Personally, I would go since it will be a nice reward after all that hard work…Bon Voyage!
