Support Group for Those of Us Living With Mild Dementia

I know there is a Dementia Caregiver Support Group.

I would like to have a group for people like me. I am entering the Mild Dementia phase from Mild Cognitive Impairment.
It’s frightening to think about my future.

Could a group for Dementia Patients be started?

My neurologist was the one who answered my questions on epic dreaming. I believe you would need to voice your concerns to him. Regards, Ashley

It would help to have a dream diary. Note what you did each day and what events were troubling. Note each night’s dreams, good, neutral or bad .

You might spot a trend and notice a trigger event.

@carmine100 that’s sounds like a good idea, as I imagine some of it could be stress related. Regards, Ashley

Good reminder,
I was doing that at one point and then I let it drop off a couple months back.
Thank you

I too have had the experience of driving to a familiar place and not recognizing it. That was very alarming. I wasn’t sure what to do so I pulled off the road into a parking lot and just sat in my car after a few minutes of taking deep breaths, I understood where I was and was able to make my way home, but I was pretty shaky after that.

I’m reading all the comments in here about dimentia.
I know for a fact that I have it but did not think anything about it. Figured and always saying “just getting old”?

However I have noticed lately, basically in the last year more and more bad bad dreams. Violent. Maybe too many action movies, I said.

My question is. What kind of a doctor does one see to diagnose this fun event? My pcp always just looks at blood pressure and depression. Ok so that needs to be taken care of. I’m 82 and I feel these changes coming on. Do I just go on as usual and not worry about them?

@kathymj a gerontologist or neurologist would be a good starting point.

I haven’t been sleeping the best lately primarily due to hallucinatory dreams that bleed into reality.
I had a psychiatrist appointment today and he suggested and called in a prescription for Prazosin.
I told him I don’t want to take something that kills my brain’s natural way of expressing itself and processing things.
He said this is used a lot for treating PTSD patients who experience night terrors and these hallucinatory dreams that interfere with sleep pattern.
He knows my history and says he has seen this work well for others and to try it out if I want.
My dreams have been like acid trips; some good some bad,
like Alice in Wonderland last night.
Trippy stuff.
And I just don’t know about the medication ?

Interesting, I haven’t taken Prazosin, but let ne know if it works for you.
I can dig how you are wary of taking a new drug, I don’t care for popping pills, I should say popping any new pills as my cupboard looks like a pharmacy now😄,but if it works, sounds like it certainly would be worth it. As for the acid trips, ooops, wait a minute, this is a Mayo Clinic forum 👁️🫢, Never mind. Regards, Ashley

@craigbyrom I’m about a quarter through an incredibly helpful book written by a person with early onset Alz Dis. I highly recommend it. In the first chapter she covers sensory changes, including dreams like you are describing. the book is “What I Wish People Knew about Dementia from someone who knows” by Wendy Mitchell. Honestly, I can’t put the book down. Here’s a photo of part of the table of contents. It is so revealing and informative.

Take daily notes on your day time activities and dreams to see if medication works. Medications aren’t usually a cure, they allow us to be able to identify the causes of our issues.
