Entire left of body goes numb inside: not stroke, it’s not TIA, MS

Posted by pakeemer @pakeemer, Feb 15, 2023

I’ve been discussing this a bit in the hemiplegic migraine area. But I want to take a different approach and just put this out there and see what others may have to offer. The doctors in my area didn’t seem to be of any help, which seems to be very common with what I’m reading here.

So here’s my situation in a nutshell. I am not going to go into all the other various symptoms right now. So what takes place is the entire left side of my bod ,can go numb from the top of my head right down the centerline of my body All the way down to my toes. It’s not a stroke, it’s not a TIA, it’s not MS. Hemiplegic migraine is the only other thing that I’ve come across so far that can cause this. But the doctors in my area give me a blank stare when I even say that word. What I’m wondering is if anyone reading this knows of any other sort of thing that can cause Numbing on one side of the body. I’m somewhat operating as if it’s hemiplegic, although I get no paralysis. I get a lot of other stuff and it’s a frequent daily thing and it just knocks me right down. So aside from all of the other symptoms, is there anything else out there that you are aware of that can cause numbing on one side of the body, deep numbing. I don’t lose the sensation of feel or touch, so it’s not like numbing on the outside.
I am eagerly waiting for responses!

My story. Went to hospital Nov 29th thinking stroke, Left hand and arm going numb. CT scans first day showed no signs of stroke. Overnight first day, numbness went to shoulder and down entire left side of body, leg and foot and also to bottom of right jaw. After more CT scans, 5 total, they discharged me saying no signs of stroke or serious spinal problems. MRI was not possible due to Pacemaker leads placed in 2011. Also noticed the heel and bottom of right foot are numb.

Went to spine Dr. whom took xrays and looked at hospital records, said nothing he could do, go to large Hospital ER and get evaluated properly.

I eventually got to Mayo Clinic ER and am now waiting to hear back if they can do an MRI after getting all the info on my pacer and leads.

Reading all these posts is not giving me a lot of hope.

I am going to be treated as an outpatient. My initial assessment only took several hours, I was impressed with the speed. They followed up the next week with getting my pacer info.
I guess the holidays are slowing things down. Hopefully I will hear from someone soon.

I have been experiencing similar symptoms for the past 6 years. I also have had similar experiences with doctors not having any idea what the cause could be. Sometimes the symptoms last for less than a minute, other times for hours. Any insight to diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. I have been to Cleveland clinic and UPMC.

Have you visited a Neurologist? Have you had a brain scan?

@bobweller I have had MRI, CT scan, eeg, multiple other tests and have found nothing. Hoping someone here may have insight as to what may be a diagnosis. Have left side numbing that is intermittent. Sometimes more severe lasting hours, other times 5 or 10 minutes and it goes away.

My left side numbness has been constant since it started Nov 30, 2025.
I finally got appointments for MRI's but they are at the beginning of March 2026.
The feeling of compression in my left arm, hand and foot has slowly been getting worse.
Wife is trying now to see if things can be moved up.

I'm encouraged by finding others that have similar symptoms and no diagnosis as this has been my experience. Really hoping for some connection to a professional or anyone that might be able to provide insight for this problem.

It’s not spinal that’s been already ruled out because as I mentioned, the numbness is all the way to the tip of my head. In the very top of your head is not affected by spinal. So the doctors in my area say so anyway.

@pakeemer did you figure this out because I have the same exact issue?

No, not yet. All the Neurologists I wanted to see wouldn't accept my Aetna insurance, so I had to change it. I see a Neurologist from Shands in Gainesville on Thursday.

64 years of being covered by work insurance and this was the first time I was refused.
