Pulmonary function test with limited ability to push air out?

Posted by vostie @vostie, Feb 27 10:08am

I have transient shortness of breath, very limited energy and have an order for a pulmonary function test. When the tech tried to perform the test, I could not push air out of my lungs strong enough for her and as many times as she required. She kept telling me I was not trying hard enough over and over again. Then she ended the test because I could not perform to the standard. How do you perform this test on a person with limited energy and shortness of breath? There must be a procedure for people with limited ability.

I recently started seeing a physical therapist for long Covid. The first test she did on me was to see how much air I could breathe out. It was very little. Not a matter of trying, just a matter of capacity.

The good news is the therapy that I have started to address this and other symptoms, including fatigue and brain fog. Shortly I’m going to post the protocol I’ve been using in a new thread. So many people don’t have access to informed doctors or specialized therapies, I thought I would share. I just need some brain working well time to pull it together.

I had the exact issue with my PFT. I'm 6 years in to this life changing hell. I get short of breath real quick, I used to be very active and today I can't walk 100 yards and need to sleep 12 hrs. I hope and pray for some cure soon, but I fear we have been forgotten.

It's good to hear that someone's issues are being addressed and helped by therapy. I haven't had much luck with my local rehab programs. I'm looking forward to reading your protocol, with the knowledge that what works for one person might not work for someone else. But you've given me hope. Wishing you continued progress.
