Nighttime Dry Mouth

Posted by kacey1 @kacey1, Oct 14, 2024

I'm a 79-year-old female with idiopathic dry mouth that has become progressively worse in the past two years. I go to bed at 11pm and will wake up every hour with dry mouth. When I wake up, I'll use either Act gum, sprays, water, or lozenges. By 5am, my mouth is so dry I have to get up and eat breakfast.
Tests for autoimmune diseases have been negative. Taking Pilocarpine gave me a headache.
Had anyone had success with products that work during the night?

Be careful to keep anything with xylitol away from dogs and cats. Dogs who ingest xylitol suffer a severe drop in blood sugar and can also suffer liver damage. The jury is out on how seriously cats are affected, but that is probably because a cat will typically only ingest a small amount. Don't take a chance.

@wootsie Hi and WELCOME to MayoClinicConnect! I see that you have been a member of MCC since last summer but have just now made a comment Hey, we’re glad that you’ve joined the group. So, pets are very important to you—-how many do you own?
Do you have an autoimmune disease that you need some answers for?

I got one and I could still open my mouth - I might’ve put it on wrong. You know how you sometimes kind of half wake up and know your mouth is open??

I use Biotene spray and gel. The gel works well at night, a small amount helps.

@pb50 I couldn’t wear the mouth tape - I have claustrophobia and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I’m a big mouth breather - don’t know what to do now.

I never was claustrophobic until I was talked into one of those sleep apnea masks. A very bad experience. I must have put it on wrong as it blew air into my eyes & then mouth, then when I tried to pull it off, a strap pulled some of my hair. I have an appointment soon with my sleep doctor, and I bet she will be upset, but I will not go thru that again. Very poor care at the place that supposedly tried to "fit" and "help" me with the mask. They even refused to let me try on different style masks.

@kmm29 --- Be VERY careful keeping chewing gum, or anything in your mouth while you sleep. One can choke very easily. Mouthwash, or of course any liquid is fine.
My aunt died from choking on a drop in her sleep. There should be a warning on the box of this possibility.

@mermaid7272 I know, I could only wear one mask, Sleepweaver, and it’s made out of material and not plastic. I’ve used it 10 years. I had heart failure from sleep apnea. After using the CPAP, the heart failure went away. I pretty much have to use a CPAP.

@maghera I have a Resmed 10 machine, and it’s totally quiet. If you can, try a Sleepweaver mask - made out of material. I even bought 3 on Amazon.

I have dry mouth because of my CPAP - it just started. Is there anything other than Biotene spray?
