Shocked by aging process

Posted by seniormiz @seniormiz, Jan 25 8:54am

My fingernails and toenails stopped growing and just keep breaking off. My hair is falling out. My memory is not as sharp and sometimes I feel a little woozy. I hate this. I want my body and my senses back.

Not sure yr age. At 73 I had same symptoms. Got pissy about it all. Put myself on HRT. It helped a lot. Age doesn't matter w taking it.
Last year started w proteins 1 gram for each pound for ideal weight. Then collegen peptides. Hair and nails are back!! Joints and tiredness gone.

Aging can be hard. But there are things you can do to push it back. My finger/toenails also started just coming apart at the tips. AI suggested adding lotion to the area. Seems to be working great. You really also have to stay strong. Lift weights. Walk daily. Squats. The mind does seem to fade away. Working on something new can help. Play the piano. Even if you have no such skill, work on learning one song. 73M.

@cstrutt52 there are oils/products that can be applied to the nails just like polish . Solar oil is one. I've used a variety, applying every night while I read in bed. Hoof and Mane may be another product. It is a white jar with a picture of a horse. It is like a thick, almost waxy product. I'll usually apply that when I am going to drive for 20 minutes or so. I keep it in my car. Slather it across my nails. 20 minutes later, rub it in and all over hands. The nails lose moisture as we age just like the skin.

The one I can't stand is that my hair has gotten so soft. I have thick great hair but because of its softness it doesn't have the body or hold its shape.

I hate being 65 and getting chronic health problems! It is especially hard not to feel low when we see some of our favorite celebrities passing away...Diane Keaton and Catherine O'Hara, i am thinking of you. 💔 One solution would be to not pay attention to the obits, not reading them, but then you get curious and if you are like me, you probably head straight to Cause of Death.

My mom was a very wise woman and also a holocaust survivor, she was a POW for five years and lost her family including young ones. She always told me to keep my sense of humour and not to take myself too seriously, if I ever bemoaned myself about getting older she would say, then die young, I know it sounds harsh but there’s a point in there. I lost her a while ago and now I’m almost 75 years old and in my sixth year lung cancer survivor, believe me when I say that you’re privileged to get older because so many people don’t get to experience it including children, God bless you.

@frouke Your mother is amazing! Thank you for sharing! I, for one, am facing aging like a wimp. 😅 And i do not even have constant pain, like so many do! So, i just want to represent the view of those who are fine people, but nervous agers! 🙂

@riverdawn
just a word. The more you fight the inevitable, the more you may suffer. Even though you can't like what's happening, you can choose to accept it and "go with it." Think about how you may have dealt with big waves in the ocean.
If you can knit together many moments of gratitude, that really helps.

@riverdawn hi, i get your concern, but I’m grateful to be 80…I beat cancer, so far, and cherish each day…there are people in their 90s with health issues and they still enjoy much of life…we can choose how we view life, that’s our power—and we try to keep it alive in the best way we can !

@riverdawn I'm sorry you find getting older something to "hate." My very wise Mom viewed her life as "chapters" and when loss of my Dad, of her health and her abilities closed a chapter, she simply started writing a new one. In her final chapter, after she could no longer travel, or even walk, she learned to watercolor. She recreated scenes she remembered from her travels. I try to adopt this philosophy as well.

Here are ways I adapt:
I try to be grateful every day for what I have, and stop worrying about what I have lost.
I work hard to keep learning.
I meet new people - this means I have to leave my "nest" and go where people are, but there is an endless amount to be learned by talking/listening to new folks. Often a simple smile and "How are you doing?" can start a conversation.
I appreciate. Creation, modern science and medicine, the stunning accomplishments of Olympic athletes, my place in the wide world.
I reach out to help others.
I accept. My limitations, help from others, that the world is changing around me.

Can you think of one thing you can do, as you age, that might help you to find happiness?
