Low Dose Naltrexone side effects- do they go away?
I have been on LDN for 2 mo. 3 mg for 1 month gave me digestive issues, dropped to 1.5mg took for a week and it started to make me feel like I have the flu. Changed to taking it late afternoon and most side effects went away except it would still cause loose stools 1x a day. Now in 2nd month titrating up to 2.0 mg for 2 weeks and after 4 days I feel like I have the flu. Super frustrated because it is getting rid of my oral lichen plaus but I feel like crap. I am just wondering if anyone else has had a similiar expirience? Thanks in advance.

3 ReactionsI’m sorry to hear how challenging this has been for you, @zinnia55. I will be interested to check out the Reddit thread offered by @vostie…thanks!
I am not a medical professional and have not used LDN in 10 years for reasons that are not relevant here. (I would try it again if I felt I needed it.) My history with LDN goes back to ~2003 or 4. I and my child, who both had some auto-immune struggles, participated in a study along with several others. The benefits were significant for me and for my child. And, we were guided in introducing this very, very slowly, working gradually toward 3.0 mg as the top dosage for that study. We kept daily track of any and all side effects and those data (and blood tests) were used to determine whether and when to increase the dosages. My child’s was delivered via transdermal cream. I took capsules. If I remember correctly, neither I nor my child exceeded 1.75 mg, yet the gains continued after we each plateaued at our max tolerable dosages.
When I read that you are experiencing positive gains alongside the unwanted effects, I wonder if your provider can help you backtrack to see if you can find a dosage that is tolerable and see if the effects on the lichen planus continue, possibly at a slower rate, from there. It may be possible to very gradually increase your dosage at a minimal percentage each time, stabilize there, see whether the positive effects are increasing, as well. When we saw gains in the study, we were kept at that dosage until the gains plateaued, and only then were we provided a higher dose that was only a fraction greater than the previous one.
I also remember that a pre-requisite for participation in that study was no dairy, gluten or soy for 6 months prior to entering the study, and I think it was believed that consuming dairy while on LDN might be too difficult. We found that consuming any form of yucca while on the medication had negative side effects as well. Flu-like (fevers, achiness, respiratory) symptoms and digestive changes, along with sleep disturbances and wild dreams were part of the adjustment period at each dosage change and we waited two weeks to see if the symptoms tapered off (they did, but those two week periods were “interesting.”. We took our dosages ~10pm each day.
I hope this helps and I wish you full success in recovering from the lichen planus.

3 Reactions@gynosaur42 Hi! this information is very helpful , thank you for sharing your information. I was not warned about gluten dairy or soy. I think I was still eating gluten and dairy when I started LDN. I have recently stopped gluten and dairy thinking it could be triggering my auto immune disease. I just did a google dive after reading your information and can see how these things could have been hurting my progress. As of today 1 week on 2 mg the stomach aches have stopped so maybe this is my dosage. What I keep "hearing" is to titrate up every 2 weeks till you at maximum dosage but I dont know what max dosage should be yet. I am going to move more slowly and see how I do. Thanks again I so appreciate the input.
