Ladies: How are you managing vaginal atrophy as you age?
TO THE LADIES ONLY: As I got older I started developing vaginal atrophy. Then I started developing open splits on my labia that were extremely painful. I went to urgent care one weekend and was prescribed vaginal estrogen medicine. It did the trick but I didn’t want to use estrogen. I went to a GYN that recommending organic coconut oil to use externally only. This was a few years ago and it has worked perfectly. I have never had another problem. At all. I wanted to pass along a natural inexpensive solution to vaginal atrophy.

Which brand of organic coconut oil is best to use for vaginal dryness?
@beanlisa56 For those of us with breast cancer any kind of estrogen replacement is totally counter indicated. So for me, it is good to know of natural topical solutions as well.
@beanlisa56, I used estradiol suppositories called Vagifem for years. Because I had a total hysterectomy at age 36, and was denied any hormone treatment, by 60, i was sloughing off dead tissue in a vaginal discharge. It took a while to get a diagnosis - finally found an ace gynecologist/urologist associated with Brown University Health. She was able to restore elasticity in whatever tissue was left with the vagifem. But eventually - 2-4 yrs later - the discharge resolved and a couple of years afterwards , I stopped the estradiol. All good now but it was a journey.

4 Reactions@pb50 yet another reason to not use hormone creams in your vagina.
Thank you for sharing the coconut oil tip! I used it exclusively until I turned 47 and developed acute pain and dryness from the genitourinary symptoms of perimenopause. My bladder hurt so bad I couldn't walk! No UTI. Vagifem worked for several months, then Imvexxy. Sometimes, I rub on a cream. But I almost always start my day with a slathering of coconut oil! And it's anti-microbial.

3 Reactions@beanlisa56 Totally agree, and let’s not forget our bones which rely on estrogen to maintain density and prevent osteoporosis, which is no fun at all!! Please speak with GYN if you are on the fence with the estrogen issue.

So is it helpful to use vagifem (estradiol) ?
Seems to be a conflict, but I'm not sure. I have bladder incontinence, I do twice daily Keigle (sp?) exercises, but it seems to be getting worse. I hike with a group, so it can be inconvenient and even embarrassing. Help!

1 Reaction@greengold I certainly don’t have all the answers about incontinence. Is some of it DNA? Don’t know. I just know that I’m entering my 13th year doing gentle yoga which includes a lot of core exercise, balance exercise and Kegle exercises and, so far, I am not incontinent. My friends that don’t do yoga are. I may become incontinent tomorrow. But, I have noticed that a lot of the class has the same exercises recommended for incontinance and core strengthening.

1 Reaction@sharonba my GYN is the one that told me not to use it, to use coconut oil instead. She is relatively young, has outstanding credentials, and is at the renown Woman’s Hospital here in BR where they are cutting edge. I have had such a great result with her advice, I am not questioning it. I am 78, I don’t have UTIs, I am not incontinant, I average 8,000 steps a day, just started resistance training, have great balance and volunteer for a litter removal non-profit. I am sticking with it. I will not use hormones on or in my body.
