Ladies: How are you managing vaginal atrophy as you age?

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Sep 21, 2023

TO THE LADIES ONLY: As I got older I started developing vaginal atrophy. Then I started developing open splits on my labia that were extremely painful. I went to urgent care one weekend and was prescribed vaginal estrogen medicine. It did the trick but I didn’t want to use estrogen. I went to a GYN that recommending organic coconut oil to use externally only. This was a few years ago and it has worked perfectly. I have never had another problem. At all. I wanted to pass along a natural inexpensive solution to vaginal atrophy.

Yes coconut oil is great for comfort and for sex. But and here's the biggest but, it does not stop the vaginal tissues from thinning like estrace does. It also prevents UTIs which is very important as we age. Very little gets absorbed systemically

@jeanninec I don’t have sex, don’t want to so my vaginal tissues do very well on the coconut oil. Perfectly well actually. I can’t speak to whether it works for someone interested in sex. I haven’t had a UTI in about 50 years, so I’m good there, too. I do not drink sodas at all and drink a lot of clean water everyday.

Good for you! Genetics has a lot to do with it too. I took excellent care of myself, diet, exercise, regular check ups. Still developed cancer.

I hope you continue in good health.

I have done all that and still have heart disease. It will probably kill me. I just can’t take statins, so I do the best I can to have the healthiest life possible, but I still have great disease.

My BFF has recovered from cancer. She also lives the healthiest life possible. It didn’t keep her from getting cancer.

That’s all why I don’t use hormones. Whether high risk or low risk, I prefer not to take the risk and use coconut oil instead.

I agree that the risk is lower than oral estrogen. Sometimes we just take the risk. I was in so much pain that if the coconut oil had not worked I would have used the cream, too. I am not against drugs, I just look for safer alternatives if such exists. I am so happy you have never had any problems with it, but someone else might be the person that gets cancer from it.

This from the Mayo Clinic:
Elderly women greater than 65 years of age may have an increased risk of certain side effects during treatment, especially stroke, invasive breast cancer, and memory problems.

@gypsyone987 I am not, but I didn’t inquire of my GYN about that because I am sexually inactive. Others on this thread have said that they did use it inside, however.

Hello llynch,
I had exactly the same problem and was prescribed the same treatment.
Except that I also had pelvic floor physical therapy. I do use the estrogen cream twice a week and use the coconut oil the other days. It works.
I wasn’t afraid of the estrogen cream as it doesn’t have the same risks as oral estrogen.
I was glad to see your post as no one talks about this problem. They don’t tell you that menopause never ends and can create medical conditions that must be addressed.

I had breast cancer that was fed by estrogen. Anyone that is at risk or has had breast should check with their oncologist before using a synthetic estrogen

@tonisch I’m so sorry you went through that. My friend also. I get a bit put out with people that say they use estrogen and haven’t had breast cancer. That is such a disservice to those that will have estrogen fueled breast cancer.

@rnsrogan it’s great stuff and it WORKS and it won’t make you sick. Actually good for your hair, too.

I’m glad to see members sharing their experiences and what has or hasn’t worked for them. Vaginal dryness and atrophy can be really uncomfortable, and it’s helpful for people to hear how others have navigated it.

According to Mayo Clinic, there are several treatment options for vaginal atrophy, ranging from over-the-counter moisturizers and lubricants to prescription therapies like low-dose vaginal estrogen and other medications. The right approach depends on an individual’s symptoms, health history, and preferences. (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/vaginal-atrophy/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352294)
Because of that, treatment decisions are best made by working with your doctor, who knows your health history.

Connect is place to share experiences and support one another, but it’s important to remember that what works well for one person may not be the right choice for someone else.
