Biologic caused infections

Posted by apopson @apopson, Dec 12, 2023

Recently hospitalized 3 times. Each time for a week. Infection in hand that extended to elbows.
A week later infection in knee then left rib area that is very painful. Infection control physician said may need to remove the fluid from this area. All of these infection areas are on left side. Dr said from biologic
Has been on Vancomycin for almost a month.
Has anyone experienced this from the biologic
depressing there immune system. He stopped it 6 weeks ago.

I’m not sure what you are asking. I had severe pain, swelling and weakness in hands elbows shoulders hips and ankles. Weakness to extent I couldn’t squeeze shampoo bottle without putting it between my knees. Much less open a door. Horrible onset and after one Rheumy that was after a gold star with the insurance company, taking me through multiple non-biologic options, I found a better one who put me on Humira and I was better in days.

My wife's symptoms are cognitive decline along with skin blisters along with hundreds of small pimples with little scabs, for more than a year now, just thinking could their be a connection

Hi
How awful to hear about infection from biologics. I hope you’re feeling better. I started with Humera for a year then it stopped helping. Started on Cosentyx and this only lasted 5 months. I did some research online as to how the different biologics work and saw that the ones I took were targeting the same proteins. I found a different biopic that works on the opposite proteins Taltz and my Rheumatologist said fine try it . It’s been working amazing for me. No psoriasis plaques forming on my hand joints and cracks and bleeding. Now I am good for 3 weeks then it seems the last week before my injection my hands are stiffer and swollen. I’ll carry on till it worsens or not working. I take Morphine for more severe hand pain and usually take Tylenol for Arthritis-1or 2 - as needed. Hope you feel better soon

Thank you Kitty. Humira for 5 years then stopped working. Then Taltz several months, then all the infections started. Off all biologics now. It seems the rheumatologists push them. Take care and God Bless.

@apopson I think it’s a very personal thing because I’m on Taltz with no side effects and feeling so much better. It’s a life changer for me . I think it’s getting the right one or the right drug . It’s difficult to get on what works especially when you have infections and the biologic is beneficial.

Not me personally. but a good friend is on Humera. He developed a UTI which became systemic rather quickly despite antibiotic treatment(possibly the wrong antibiotic for the particular infection, another story). Hospitalized for a year. Took a while to figure out the cause of the infection that spread to his L4, L5 vertabrae. He was taken off the Humera for a while in order to battle the infection better. Perhaps the Humira did not cause the infection, but it did have a hand in letting it get out of control. Back on the Humira since the infection has resolved.

@blueberre I was on Enbrel years ago and my neutrophils dropped to a very dangerous level, so no ability to fight any infection. Stopped the Enbrel for many months and tried again - same thing happened. I am now on Xeljanz without experiencing that same side effect.
