Has anyone seen an Endocrinologist for osteoporosis?

Posted by stanfojc @stanfojc, Jan 10 3:28pm

I had pelvic fractures in July 2025. I am seeing a Physical Therapist. Due to issues with side effects to the osteo medications, I cannot take any of them. I have been advised to see an endocrinologist. I'm not sure what an endocrinologist would do for me. Does anyone know what I might expect from this type of specialist?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

An Endo specialist will be able to tell you if there is something specifically causing your osteoporosis and if there is a way fix the cause. In my case, my parathyroid was hyper and causing too much hormone production and this caused my bones to shed at a very high rate. The Endo will advocate for you for what next steps to take and what medication for your osteoporosis. I am under their care since November and will be for one year so I still have a long road ahead I am a healthy and active 62 yrs old -3.0 lumbar T score. I feel my PCP could have done more tests last year so I wouldn't have developed osteop, I am happy to be under the care of an Endo.

With new Dexa scores, my GP gave me referral to Endocrinologist. Her only recommendation was Evenity. Their office handout/literature ........"warning..potential heart attack or stroke"! I was not interested. All doctors have their own preferences for drugs even after review of your history. I'm not certain what I will do yet, but more fractures are not what I want. One thing I am doing, considering our family history of Osteoporosis, is advising my children and grandchildren to get baseline Dexa screens to get them on exercise or other bone building meds if needed.

Hi Susan. How old are you ? Have you or any immediate family members had cancer ? For high risk patients such as those there is another option-Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators . I know little about it, but will be seeing an endo next week and will be a discussion topic. I hope to be very prepared with a list if time is of the essence which is so common at a physicians office these days. Best of luck to you in your journey to optimal health !

@sfe431 hello I will be 61 at the end of the month. My dad had prostate cancer but I don’t think that is an issue with HRT. Yes be prepared and make sure they answer ALL your questions. I am thinking of handing them my questions before we get started so they can see them all and hopefully feel more responsible about answering. It is just a thought.

I did see an endo for just that. She immediately jumped to Prolia or Reclast. I have Hashimotos and she is keeping track of that. I was hoping she would offer BHRT, but told me she did not prescribe that for osteoporosis. I should have told her I was having terrible hot flashes. For now, I think I will ditch the endo. She offered me no other options. Your PCP can also check your thyroid hormone levels. However, a different endo that you might see, possibly will have other options for you. Would not hurt to try, if only to check out thyroid issues.

@blueberre Go to a functional medicine doctor for HRT.

Hi ! I am seeing an endocrinologist for the 1st time next week. I have my dexa scans ready to go with a list of questions , a list of conditions that may also be affecting my low T-score of -3.2 , and my family history of no outstanding adverse bone history. I have had no breaks, but my weight loss from 135 ( steady for years) to as low as 119, my rising blood pressure, bone pain , gastro issues, joint inflammation and Hashimotos with erratic TSH levels are all suggestive of an underlying issue/s. I am 68, active with walking, the gym and grandchildren. My oldest sister age 87 now was an avid hiker, she was put on Fosamax with negative side-effects, got off of it and is still out there hiking and going to the gym. Just be very prepared, take notes to help you have a concise conversation, latest bloodwork/scans and if you don't feel heard , seek another opinion until you do. Good luck !! Hope you will let us know how it went and I will do the same .

@sfe431 I see my endocrinologist in about 3 weeks. I'm very interested in what he prescribes to offset the ultimate onset of osteoporosis coming my way. I have good DEXA and FRAX scores but then again I had a triple fracture of my pelvis in early 2024, (slip off a ladder where the step was only 12 inches off the ground) a fractured vertebrae sometime in my much younger years, a left hip replacement in 2016, and an untreated right hip that is bone on bone that they will not operate on since it gives me no pain. I'm a 78-year-old male, 5'10" and 175 lbs. Former height was 6 foot tall. I'm currently recovering from left knee arthroscopic surgery performed in April 2025. That recovery is going very slowly. For supplements, I'm thinking the endocrinologist should show some interest in me taking some special type of calcium, strontium, D-3, boron, selenium. maybe more. I'm sure I have some osteoporosis in my back as well, as I have 3 or 4 bulging disks, two pairs of vertebrae bone on bone, and slight scoliosis right side. That's a sad story.

I was seeing an endocrinologist - suggested by my GP - for osteoporosis. She recommended Reclast, as I had reactions to all other (oral) meds prescribed by my GP. However, after the 1st infusion, I had a severe reaction approximately 12 - 14 hours after the infusion. High fever, chills, sweating, nausea (dry heaves), dizziness, and severe headache. I reported this - She said my reaction was highly unusual. I felt so awful, I refused future infusions. Honestly felt as if I had been poisoned. Now I am working on dietary changes - following a low lectin diet - and significant increase in weight workouts. Slight improvement in my bone density after my last exam. Next one this summer. I will say that I had 2 bicycle 'cradhes'. Both times fell on my femoral neck (huge bruising/hematoma), but no fractures. My dexa score is lowest in this area. So I belive my 'bone strength' might be much better than my bone 'density'. I hope your endocrinologist recommends working on gut bacteria remediation. Much of what I read indicates a possible absorption issue when the 'diet' is nutritionally sound.

I am 80. I fractured two pelvic bones and one sacrum bone summer of 2025. I didn't fall but I was hiking and probably overdid it. I am seeing a phy therapist now. She is setting me up with an exercise program intended to strengthen my core muscles to protect my bones and help prevent more fractures. For various reasons, I cannot take any of the osteo meds (six of them). I am moving soon and will try to see an endo doctor once I get settled.

My husband had two knee replacements so I know of the recovery process with that. I hope something can help you. It sounds like you've had more than your share of problems.

Thanks for sharing since it helps to hear of what others are doing to try to get along as best as possible.
