Clearing Mucus Plugs

Posted by deestrada @deestrada, Jan 1 2:49pm

My last CT scan showed an increase in mucus plugs in my lungs. I am consistent in my airway clearance protocol, and have been on Brinsupri 3 months. My sputum has diminished considerably since Brinsupri, but mucous plugs have increase. Has anyone had success in clearing mucous plugs and what has worked for you?

Can not resist mentioning this. I went to a NP while my primary was away. I had a flare going on and she told that the "pearls" were lung tissue! I knew that wasn't right so when I saw my pulmonologist he made it clear it was mucus.

I use Albuterol & 7% Saline solution twice a day and have a problem bringing out the mucus using the Aerobika. A good friend who is a RN-PHD gave me some Elderberry Tinture which I took for about 6 weeks which I shared with my husband who has a bad heart and he said it makes him feel better. Was running out of the Tinture so checked some things out on line and found that Tinture & Extract are the same recipe except for alcohol which is in the Tinture. During my search I found Mullein Extract and ordered it along with a Mullein capsule which is supposed to "clean lungs". I started bringing up the mucus from my lungs by the carload! I had a CT just this past week and learned that the mucus buildup in my right lower lung area has been resolved! I let my doctor (Mayo in Jax) know what I had been using - hoping to hear back after the weekend how she feels about the Mullein. PS - I will be 90 years old come November.

@lsm1936 both mullein capsules and extract are available at Whole Foods each about $9. I bough both but how and when do you take any of them and which you think works better

I take them in the morning after breakfast - not sure which is best. My latest scan shows that I am getting good results as the statement from the PA who reviewed the scan results says "the problem is resolved" - I still have a mucus problem but the lower lobe of the right lung has cleared out and the mucus keeps coming out. Unfortunately, MAC is incurable, but as long as a simple treatment works I am thankful. I am not the least interested in the "big 3" due to a horrible allergic reaction to antibiotics,

@narelled23 @dianajc I clear my mucus into a clear plastic solo cup and am able to see the different liquids that I clear out with clearing my lungs and throat of it all.

Three pulmonologists looked at pictures I took of the cups and what I bring up....they could clearly see it all. In the cup were and are, when I do my therapy treatments etc. etc., what one might consider 'pus', meaning formed solid pieces. Prior to my being diagnosed and not understanding what was wrong with me these use to be deep green in color and would come up every so often when I 'sucked' them up and out when I felt something was stuck in me. I did think that I had an infection and told/showed my PCP....at that time he didn't think anything of it. However, a year later he was the one that ordered the C Scan and result....BE. I had lost 35 lbs. in that time and he finally understood....this woman does have a problem.
After my diagnosis and learning more of what to do the 'plugs' are light yellow in color vs the deep green color. I recently brought up what I consider a large 'plug/pus piece" that I hope was the one that was apparently recognized and related to me by the pulmonologists...as .....'more plugging and worse in the lower left lobe.' Recently after the large plug, I have had much smaller ones (plugs) build up and come out from the pockets, damages, of my lungs.
I have loose yellow mucus that comes up and is released along with the smaller, spec like, plugs that come up and out.
So that is what I am calling mucus plus. Some understand differently, meaning other BE patients, they feel/understood mucus plugs to be hard. Mine are gel like. Some BE patients say they do not have mucus plugs. So....again...we are all different and at different stages with our BE journey and infections.

So you feel that the capsules are as effective as the tea? I just ordered one box of tea to see if it is effective for me and also palatable. Thanks!

@lilianna They also have mullein gummies with 2000 mg of mullein each. I take one in morning and in evening and seems to be helping. A little pricey, though. Made my acentialabs. Got them on amazon

What do plugs or pearls look like? I cough up mucus but not sure what you are referring to.
