Clearing Mucus Plugs

Posted by deestrada @deestrada, Jan 1 2:49pm

My last CT scan showed an increase in mucus plugs in my lungs. I am consistent in my airway clearance protocol, and have been on Brinsupri 3 months. My sputum has diminished considerably since Brinsupri, but mucous plugs have increase. Has anyone had success in clearing mucous plugs and what has worked for you?

I bought tincture, pills and tea. I’ve been taking it for several days but so far, no change. Hope it helps.
What do plugs or pearls look like? I cough up mucus but not sure what you are referring to.

@scoop Great picture and description Scoop. Not necessarily hard but I would imagine if they sat in the lungs long enough they might become hard????
In December I brought up a mucus plug that was nearly one inch long and hope it represented my clearing the lower left lobe that the last C Scan indicated the area had worsened, plugging.
I believe that postural drainage, which I am fortunate to be able to do, along with my doing percussion on my lungs...front and back...helps tremendously.

I take them in the morning after breakfast - not sure which is best. My latest scan shows that I am getting good results as the statement from the PA who reviewed the scan results says "the problem is resolved" - I still have a mucus problem but the lower lobe of the right lung has cleared out and the mucus keeps coming out. Unfortunately, MAC is incurable, but as long as a simple treatment works I am thankful. I am not the least interested in the "big 3" due to a horrible allergic reaction to antibiotics,

@joyeous I have had quite a few sputum checks over the last few years, only two of which have come back positive and then they were with different strains a month or two apart. The specialist indicated that he thought it was contamination...however I had lost around 6kg in weight in the preceding year. The subsequent 3 tests were all negative, along with further tests I had conducted a few months back. I am at a loss to know why there is such volume of mucus.

Have you had a CT scan? From what I’ve understood, that is the primary way to know if you have bronchiectasis. Frequently bronchiectasis is detected when someone is having a CT scan for something else and it also picks up their lungs in the scan. The radiologist should mention if you have bronchiectasis and what he/she observes about your lungs. If you’re going to a pulmonologist and haven’t had a CT scan, you should request one.

My pulmonologist does a bronchochospy to look at my BE and then does a lavage wash. Then can take samples and get a good look at the severity.

I have had one horrible experience with mucus plugs. One Sunday night, I was sitting on the couch and began to choke. It came out of nowhere. I knew what was happening but could do nothing. I began to make weird noises trying to get air in, but could not. This went on for about a minute and my husband called 911. I made it off the couch and tried walking but just could not breathe. I was humped over trying not to fall down but move at the same time. Still could not breathe. I finally made it to our counter with a bar on it. I grabbed the bar and pulled myself upward so that I was standing upright. I am not sure what happened but suddenly my airways were opened and I was getting air. Of course, in walked the ambulance guys. I did find out later that I had Covid Pneumonia. Pulmonologist thinks that I had a mucus plug and I dislodged it by pulling myself upwards. Not sure, but that was the scariest moment of my entire life. I still get scared every time I am choking on mucus and that was 4 years ago.

@1fancydancear Sooo scary! Pneumonia will do that. How’s your airway clearance routine? Twice a day with 7% saline I find very helpful. I’m also on Brinsupri, which has made a positive difference. Wishing you better days ahead.

@1fancydancear Yes, I recently have had somewhat similar experiences and felt if I couldn't get what wanted to come up it would affect my breathing. I believe the mucus is so thick when that happens or yes a mucus plug is right there, stuck, and we are needing to do some good huff cough to get it up. Yes, movement helps.
I also will immediately do postural drainage if I can. I do not have acid reflux.
In your instance the Covid might have been part of your problem of the mucus becoming 'stuck' ????
Hope you are well over the Covid Pneumonia.

That happened 4 years ago, the mucus plug. However, this year still trying to get over RSV. It caused a Bronchiectasis flair. Pretty sure it has turned into either Pseudomonas or Pneumonia. Dr has me on two antibiotics until we get the x ray back. It had not come back as of Friday afternoon and now we are in the middle of an ice storm and can't get out of the neighborhood. I can't get sputum samples to the Dr and it will be at least week after next before we get sputum samples back for Pseudomonas. I seem to get better then go backwards. My bet is Pneumonia and not on the correct antibiotic.

@1fancydancear please keep us posted!
Also, MAC is curable, but Bronchiectasis isn’t
