Buttock/tailbone pain, sitting or lying down - symptom of PMR?

Posted by pacarolyn @pacarolyn, Oct 4, 2021

Has anyone experienced buttock/tailbone pain when seated or lying down as a symptom of PMR? Also, has anyone had labs showing elevated LDL-Cholesteral or anemia that wasn't diagnosed prior to PMR onset?

I was diagnosed with PMR in October,, 2025. It actually started in September with my upper body muscles in arms, shoulders, hands being so painful and sore I could not dress myself. Family doctor said it was PMR. He started me on 20 mg of prednisone. Within 4 days I was much better. He referred me to a Rheumatologist. Lots of tests run and seemed to feel better. On Dec 1, (on15mg prednisone) my left hip and lower back started hurting and so sore and painful I could not walk. It is now in my right hip and I am using a wheelchair most of the time. January 6, 2026 I will start Kevzara. Had xrays on back 12/29/2026. Do not know results yet. Any suggestions for more pain relief would be appreciated.

Hello @wrenn1939, Welcome to Connect. I wonder if you might be tapering off of prednisone too quickly and that increased the hip and lower back pain. You might want to scan through the following discussion to see if it might help.

Does your rheumatologist suspect the pain is not from PMR?

@johnbishop At my Rheumatologist’s visit on Monday, she did not think my back problems were a flareup of PMR. She ordered Xrays of my back. I should find out today what the Xrays show.

@wrenn1939 My guess is SI joint pain. I am dealing with that now.

Yes, I have had tailbone pain and "sit-bone" pain. It's annoying, isn't it? It comes and goes.
