How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

How is your muscle pain? How much COQ10 do you take a day?
Thank you
I get little aches and pains from time to time, but nothing close to what I had during the two years of statins. I am able to be much more active and quality of life is greatly improved. I take 100mg of Life Extensions super ubiquinol CoQ10 daily as well as turmeric as an anti-inflammatory. I am also trying a supplement called Durable Heart that has citrus bergamot and olive leaf but I have not had a lipid test since I started it. Next, if needed, I will add red yeast rice, which my cardiologist suggested, but some people get myalgias because it is so similar to statins. I have a follow up in a few weeks and hoping for the best!

3 Reactions@ctjoe7 how much COQ10 should you take?
@carolman210, I h ave read between 100mg and 400mg if you are battling statin myalgia. Not what works best

1 ReactionI wound up with necrotizing myositis from statins. If your cpk numbers are good that shouldn't be a problem but it took me ~6 months to get back to a new normal. I also had aggressive care for the myositis and have a good exercise and diet regimen. There are other options for cholesterol control than statins.

2 ReactionsI am reading all the comments and can relate to so many. I am 76 years young -- or WAS. My chol levels have been low 200s but LDL not so good (HDL however somewhat decent). In mid August I finally gave in to doc pressure and started Rosuvastatin (sp?) 10 mg, but cut pill in half so only took 5mg. daily to start with as I'm sensitive to meds. All fine, no pain, no issues. Ladidadida. Then, on Sept 28, my right knee hurt. Wondered why as I hadn't been doing many stairs, hadn't fallen, etc -- nothing I could figure out. Then early Oct more places in my right leg started to hurt until I was basically crippled in my right leg (statins are supposed to cause symmetrical issues but still). It would come and go a bit, get better, then much much worse, and when then my left knee started to hurt a bit, that's when I thought, aha, it's the statin and quit taking. I am still having some leg issues now 2 plus months later although I think it's getting better after a few PT sessions. But I think of all the people feeling crippled by this -- and I ask why take it? Is not doing so THAT risky? I mean, sure, there's a chance of this and that from cholesterol of 220 (but then I also wonder -- is 200 really a magic number?) Bottom line, we all have to weigh costs and benefits in our lives, but I will never again take a statin. Period. Being active, feeling fit at my age is both a physical and mental need, and if statin disturbs it, no statin. Maybe I'll discuss the new injectable, but first want leg to get back to normal. (I also have had a spike in LDH if any of you know what that is, which I think likely further indicates my muscles have been harmed and quickly.) By the way, CoEnzymeQ10 is not just an antioxidant -- it is something your body needs but statins specifically destroy it in your body, or so I understand. My doc did not mention it but I already knew. Good luck everybody and I hope you all make your own educated choices as to how you want to live when it comes to this issue. (I am assuming no one in this group has knowledge of clogged arteries which might change the risk issue -- I get my carotid arteries checked with a periodic LifeLineScreen)
