Please Share 3 Things You Appreciate about Being Old

Posted by Miriam, Volunteer Mentor @mir123, Nov 27 10:00am

It's Thanksgiving, so I'm looking at the positive. Some folks don't like the word "old" but I don't mind it. You can substitute "aging" if you prefer! I'm thrilled to be 71 and looking at 72. Due to serious health concerns in my youth I never expected to make it this far. So here goes--and I hope you can join in.

My Three Positive Things

1. I know what my ethics and beliefs are, and I'm no longer worried I might betray them because of outside pressure.
2. I can tell a good story based on life experience.
3. I'm less self critical. My mom told me that if she made a mistake she'd say "you're so clumsy" to herself. When she turned 80 she changed and told herself "you're doing great!"

GOOD QUESTION when there are so many negatives, esp. related to health
1) not having my period anymore
2) saying "no" to things that would make my life less happy/pleasant/comfortable
3) being slightly eccentric seems to be more acceptable. 🙂

The Senior discount when you can get it.....

2. Not having to work anymore.

3. Not driven to acquire "things" anymore. I have enough.

@ddn
Now the task becomes disposing of all those things/ treasures
in a meaningful way!
I am still working at something I really enjoy, connected to the "work"
from which I retired.
Yes, yes, yes being oneself as kooky as it may seem to others 🙂

REPLY

1) Not caring so much about what other people think
2) Not caring as much about what other people DO
3) Discovering I can begin again, but with self-acceptance and the wisdom from lessons learned

I really needed to read this discussion. I’ve been negative most of my life and was diagnosed with depression at 50. I am now nearing 82 and smiling about it. Here are my three and probably 100 or so more but I’ll do the required 3:
1. I too dress in WHATEVER I want to wear, and don’t care what ANYONE says or thinks or rolls their eyes🤣

2. I’m smiling cuz I’m nearing 82 and I love not having a filter anywhere in my mind or body🤣

3. I love that GOD is my best and last friend EVER‼️

I love Mayoconnect cuz it brought me to life again in a loving caring way. No more negativity in my life. And when something is going wrong around me in my life,
I feel God keeping me calm and serene. God bless everyone!

@kathymj my mother-in-law used to say —5 years from now , what age you are now will look ‘young’… she lived to about 93.

I love that the word "old" is not a four letter word. 🙂

I love that I no longer desire or need to follow fads but am happy with what I enjoy eating, seeing, hearing, wearing and doing

I love that I don't have to learn how to Code or worry about AI taking my job. 🙂

I am much more mellow old than when I was young, less worrying.
I am able to pick and choose what I want to spend time on.
Wiser does come with older to some of us.

1.more wisdom
2. appreciation of all living things.
3. Believe in something bigger than ourselves.

That is a good topic to write about because of everyone’s health issues and it sure can get you down ….1/. iam 77 years old and still have all my wits about me (. most of the time ). 2/ i still have my sense of humor ,(most of the time ). 3/ i have a positive attitude (most of the time ). It is a good idea to think of all the positive things in your live even in hard times …My mothers use to say when i asked her how she coped with all her health issues and she said “its just another thing to get use too “ So i have adopted that attitude !!! Merry xmas everyone !😊🇨🇦
