Living with Neuropathy - Welcome to the group

Welcome to the Neuropathy group.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet other people who are dealing with neuropathy. Let’s learn from each other and share stories about living well with neuropathy, coping with the challenges and offering tips.

I’m Colleen, and I’m the moderator of this group, and Community Director of Connect. Chances are you’ll to be greeted by volunteer patient Mentor John (@johnbishop) and fellow members when you post to this group. Learn more about Moderators and Mentors on Connect.

We look forward to welcoming you and introducing you to other members. Feel free to browse the topics or start a new one.
Let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What concerns would you like to talk about?

I’m Joyce and have CIDP (the p being polyneuropathy) and of course it’s nothing short of annoying and uncomfortable.
I’m taking Alpha Lipoic pills which has lessened discomfort in my feet which were extremely uncomfortable when in bed.

Thank you for this group. I have had neuropathy for several years . Last December I had a stroke. Since then my neuropathy has gotten worse along with balance. Some shoes that I wear mess with my balance more than others. IS there a good solution to getting some shoes that help me walk like I am sober?

@delta1 Thank you for reaching out. I have had peripheral neuropathy for at least 30 years. 10 years ago I discovered I also have autonomic neuropathy. and Last month I learned that I have Autonomic Autoimmune Functional Neurologic Dysfunction.
For many years I have worn Birkenstock sandals Narrow, and still do. Recently, finding need for closed-toe shoes and not liking the Birk prices (over $100), I started searching and now also wear Dansko and Keen with confidence. I can wear some styles of Easy Spirit and Avia tennis shoes for up to 6 hours at a time. I need good arch supports, a narrow heel cup and wide toe box. It is a tough foot to fit and Birks work well for me in the narrow cut, regular cut is sloppy. The cork bottom and insole is the thing that makes them work for me.

Hello @caseyandra66, I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @gus0557 and others. @larry4343 also mentioned paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathy earlier in this discussion (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/800892/) and may have some experience to share with you.

There is another discussion that you might find helpful:
-- Paraneoplastic Diseases: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/paraneoplastic-diseases/

Have you found any treatments or therapies that help you manage the condition and symptoms?

Hi my name is Jean and have Neuropathy in both of my feet which is creeping up on both legs to my knees
I am fed up of buying machines, creams, oils and health pills and nothing works, I do use a Magnesium spray that gives relief for a short time but that’s it
Has anyone got any good advice is something worth buying to help

Hi Everyone! My name is Alice. For some reason my feet and leg pains relax and go away when I rub them with Solanpas cream. Don’t know why but it really helps me so I can at least get to sleep. My biggest problem is balance—I stagger around and spend so much time working to stay upright that I have no stamina left to walk my dog (my favorite exercise). I’m 91 and feel good otherwise, and am blessed to be still relatively active. Is balance a problem for everyone with Neuropathy?

Hi Alice @alice90, Welcome to Connect. Thank you for sharing what helps your leg pains. Lots of us have balance as our biggest problem, especially us older ones 🙃. There are quite a few different discussions on balance and neuropathy if you want to scan through and see if you can relate to what has been shared - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/.

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy also has some helpful information on balance:

-- Maintaining Balance: https://www.foundationforpn.org/maintaining-balance/

Have you tried any exercises or physical therapy to help with your balance?

Hello @maddie14, Welcome to Connect. You are not alone in the "fed up of buying neuropathy cures club". That's one of the main reasons I joined Connect back in 2016 to learn what others have tried to help with their neuropathy symptoms. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.

You might find it helpful to scan through other member discussions and comments on "neuropathy what helps". Here's what I found using search on Connect - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/.

How long have you been dealing with neuropathy? Do you have a diagnosis?
