Posted by xmohasci @xmohashi, Mar 22, 2024

I have turned 68 and my weight has been reducing despite maintaing balanced diet. Recently, I joined the gym to stay fit and restore reasonable muscle mass. I hope I am on the right path to strengthening my maturing body.

Thanks! That looks amazing. Do you have a recipe?

@longboat1 For those that are going to try my smoothie I recommend Planet Oat Milk Barista Lovers (only 3 grams of sugar per serving) and too good yogurt. (2 grams of sugar). Some oat milk has almost as much sugar as milk.

@longboat1 Try my smoothie every morning. It consists of Oat milk, yogurt, vanilla ice cream flavored whey powder, hemp hearts, frozen bananas, frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries and frozen cherries. You will never be lacking for protein ever again and it tastes amazing.
I recommend this for anyone looking to add protein to their diet.
Try it and let me know what you all think.

PS Costco has the best prices on whey powder and frozen fruit. It is half what you pay at your local supermarket.

@daveshaw Oat milk, then yogurt (milk product), why not just whole milk? Also, Greek yogurt is much higher in protein than regular yogurt, and you can get vanilla flavored (Walmart). I get casein protein powder (online, Bulk Supplements) at a pretty good price. No clue what hemp hearts are - never heard of this.

@becsbuddy I think whey powder is better for you and Costco vanilla ice cream flavor is a must for the smoothie. You can put two servings in instead of one.

@daveshaw In full disclosure my morning smoothie is 64 ounces of which I give my girlfriend 8 ounces and I drink the rest.
Yes that is a big smoothie and even with that I don’t have a huge dinner. It is my version of intermittent fasting. It works for me and I have been having my smoothie’s for a very long time. Also if you can find frozen fruit any cheaper than Costco good for you. As an added benefit you can get vanilla ice cream whey powder at the same along with the hemp hearts.
I think whey powder is better than protein powder and I look at Costco vanilla ice cream whey powder as a key ingredient.
Enjoy everyone.

@longboat1 You buy some Oat milk Batista style
A big bag of Costco soy protein vanilla ice cream flavor
A really good low sugar yogurt
Hemp hearts
A large bag of frozen blueberries
A large bag of frozen strawberries
A large bag of frozen
cherries
Get some ripe bananas and peel a freeze
Put in 4 ounces of oat milk
Two large spoonfuls of yogurt
Three teaspoons of hemp hearts
One frozen banana
One cup of blueberries
One cup of strawberries
One cup of cherries
Make sure you have a powerful blender. The Ninja 1500 watt commercial blender
Hit blend and you have enough for you and a friend. Kids love them as well but just don’t tell them about the oat milk, hemp hearts or soy powder.
You get enough protein for the whole day.
Enjoy.

@daveshaw The best thing is it tastes great and is highly addictive. Addictive in a good way. 😊

@capnjack Oat milk has just 3 gms of sugar. Whole milk has 7-12 gms of sugar. My yogurt has 2gms of sugar and as much protein as Greek yogurt and tastes a whole lot better.
There was an article regarding protein powder not being good for you and whey powder gives you the same amount of protein.
Long story short I am sure your smoothie is good as well.
I am still waiting to hear if anyone has tried my smoothie.

PS I had never heard of hemp hearts either but they are loaded with protein and Omega 3 and 6

@capnjack I am looking at plain Greek yogurt that has 7 grams of sugar per serving and too good yogurt which 13 gms per serving and actually tastes good.
Oat milk also varies widely in gms of sugar per serving. Planet Oat milk has only 3gms of sugar per serving. Far less than milk and also other oat milks. Secondly at our age we don’t need the sugar and fat in regular milk.
All smoothies are not created equal.
Read the labels.

@daveshaw I am still waiting for feedback if anyone has tried my smoothie recipe.
Surely someone has tried it by now.
A great way to get protein and it tastes great.
I welcome any feedback.

Yes, you certainly are, but it's going to be quite a bit harder at your age. You have hormones working against you, probably poorer sleep, one or two disorders or co-morbidities...? But I admire your spirit and drive. You CAN gain back muscle mass. In turn, it will keep you warmer, and it will help you to slow weight gain that is age related. Those extra muscles will need fuel and oxygen, that latter of which comes from good lungs and an efficient heart. Don't avoid some aerobic activity, and of course that's at a reasoned pace, not all-out or too hard for too long. Slow stair climbing does wonders if you have some considerable stairs nearby. The pace will almost seem too slow to be of any good, but by the time you're into your fifth or sixth climb or landing, you'll begin to appreciate the actual work being done.
