Intermittent fasting

Posted by oregongirl77 @oregongirl77, Sep 27, 2023

I have been intermittent fasting 16/8 daily for over 2 months. I have lost 25 lbs. What I would like to know is it ok that I fast every day. Should I take a break , and skip a day occasionally? This program is working for me, better than anything I have tried before. I am 77 years old.

I recently learned from a DOAC video on women’s health that fasting for women is not the same as for men. The important thing for women is to make sure you have the fat and calories to allow you to fast safely. Generally fasting is not good for women because we don’t have the capacity. I did a 4 day fast which was absolutely wrong for me because I weighed 103 lbs and lost 10, and can’t gain it back now because I am suffering anxiety disorder. I’m 67 yrs.

Why would you need to fast at your weight?

There is this thing called autophagy, a state when your body heals itself. I was suffering with a horrible skin condition and thought it would help me heal.

This means 16 hours fasting and 8 hours nourishment. My routine is to have food from 11 am to 7 pm. From 7pm to 11 am I fast, drinking lots of water, or organic teas until bedtime. During my eating period, I realized that portion control, and quality are paramount. My vice was snacking. Now I have a hand full of nuts or fruit if the need arrives for something sweet or salty.

It is perfectly normal, @oregongirl77. Eating right when you wake up is the most important and healthiest. I suggest you eat upon waking to stimulate digestive system. (But if you wake up 11:00 then its ok).

I do the Intermediate fasting also. I do it 3-4 days in a row. On the other days I eat maybe two sensibly meal and I continue to lose a couple of pounds a week. I also drink at least 48 Oz. of water a day. I agree with you, it's the best diet I've ever been on. I'm 76 year old.

It’s been awhile since you posted. How are you doing with intermittent fasting? It’s taken me almost five years but I’ve dropped 30 pounds. I hope to lose another 15, possibly 20. Mostly I focus on eating two meals a day, breakfast and lunch, no snacking, and I try to fast 18 hours from lunch one day til breakfast the next. When I’m able I stretch the fast to 19, 20, or 21 hours but not regularly.

@sanfan That is fabulous with your fasting. Some people tell me it’s not good to fast when you are older, but as long as your nutrition is good, I say go for it. It is important to get more protein as we get older so I try to be conscious of that. I’m also trying to walk every day. I know I should do weight bearing exercises but I don’t enjoy it so it doesn’t happen. But I’m grateful I can walk, even with arthritis in my knees and hips. I shoot for 6000 steps each day.
