How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

You would think you would start with diet and exercise unless it was really out of the norm.
My wife is considering acupuncture. When she had back surgery she went through weeks of PT and then was supposed to follow up doing exercises and stretches.
They put her on some time of medication (can't remember the name) which they adjust based on her pain level at each appointment. It was a medication that was made for a different reason than pain but found it really helped with pain and is prescribed quite often.
Got to find something that helps you. WE don't have your medical and mental healh history only you medical doctors have that. For me if I was getting medical directions I did not think were good or applicable to me specifically, I would get another.
Again treat the individual patient not statistics that say do this with that as you only guide.

1 ReactionI have days I feel good and then the next the pain is back.
For those that are good again, is that what you experienced?
Yesterday was good and I was able to take a walk and do a good amount of yard work. Today not so much.
Thank you all
@ctjoe7 I don’t know your age - I’m 67, and I think some aches and pains might be aging. However, when my back is a little cranky, I remember that when I was on statins, the pain was so much worse, and at times debilitating. And it was all over my body!
@con123
LOL> Basically same age. Yeah, I expect age related (upper back) but today forearms and calves. These are what I had when I was on statins and stopped. Trying to be patient, but difficult. Thank you for responding. Just wanted to be sure one day good and one day not so much was normal progression
I’m on 10 mg of Simvastatin for a number of years which has kept my cholesterol levels within the normal range. No doubt they have cause me muscle pain throughout this time which come and go. I’m wondering have any of you delevoped neuropathy in legs or elsewhere as a result of statins? I have tingling / shock waves in my legs from my knees down almost a year now. Have had numerous scans which have been normal so I can only suggest myself that it is the statin? Any reply would be much appreciated
@banscross
Sounds familiar although I stopped my statin and still have body pain, especially legs. All tests have cone back good as well. Frustrating
Have you tried a different statin? I tolerate Prevastatin easily, but Lipitor gave me headaches and nausea. I also tried it years ago & it gave me the runs and muscle aches. But Prevastatin is a much simpler molecule, so I don’t know if it’s as effective for your case. Also, try taking CoQ10 for muscle aches.

1 ReactionAbsolutely helpful. I was told I'd be over the side effects in three days off, which that there were side effects was doubted by the doctor. A month off (after six months on for saddle pulmonary occlusion) and it gets better bit by bit, I never knew what a pain scale meant, now I do. It helps so much to know that from the others it is a reality.
