How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

Thank you. Good to hear your better.
I have been 2 months off. Take Magnesium, B2 and COQ10
Still have pain and weakness.
Guess I have to be patient..
@ctjoe7
It took a while for me - probably slowly over about 4 months or so. Maybe longer. Give it time.
Oh I wish I had a simple fix to tell you, @ctjoe7. Exercise, resistance training and good diet will go a long way in making the time as short as possible.
I am learning just how much our entire body is connected, how one thing affects another. If it is possible you have other things going on it will help to address those symptoms. My cardiologist would say you should feel significantly better a month after discontinuing or it’s not the statin causing the problem.
Have any of your symptoms improved? Have you talked a doctor about your headaches, GERD and muscle aches?
Did you or are you taking any meds or supplements to help you?
Magnesium?
COQ10 ?
B2?
Any others?
@ctjoe7 I took all those supplements as well as curcumin. It got worse rather than better. I did PT and OT, heat, ice, stretches. I could barely get out of bed, or turn over in bed without back pain. I dealt with this for 2 years. Eventually, I was finally declared statin intolerant. The best my cholesterol was on statins was 198. Cardiologist was so pleased and said, "Good job, I hope you are tolerating the statins ok" and I revolted. NO, I AM NOT. Proceeded to tell him how my life had changed. He listened.
Do you feel the supplements work for you at all?
Would you take any or all of them again?
Thank you
@ctjoe7
Nexletol and Nexelet are the two new statins that cause less side effects. I know they are no longer covered by Medicare without trying every statin on the market first.
@brokenbones - according to the manufacturer’s website ( https://www.nexlizet.com/ ), Nexletol and Nexlizet are not statins. They work differently. Not all lipid-lowering medications are statins.
